Digital Business Division
Canberra, ACT
Support the business-as-usual functions of a team in Biosecurity Digital Sustainment.
Facilitate departmental staff to conduct their biosecurity duties by ensuring core IT systems remain operational, as well as providing support to internal and external stakeholders.
Who we are
The Biosecurity Digital Reform Branch is comprised of four sections:
Cargo Systems
Cargo Systems is responsible for digital applications that support container and consignment imports coming into Australia. These systems support the Home Affairs incoming data feeds which the systems use to manage biosecurity risks associated with the Cargo pathways.
Conveyance, Passenger and Mail Systems
CPM Systems section provide ongoing support of business processes that reduce biosecurity risk on conveyance, international traveller, and mail pathways through system maintenance and defect resolution, release management, system requirements and solution design as well as supporting business requirements.
Biosecurity Risk Assessment Digital
Biosecurity Risk Assessment Digital (BRAD) is responsible for the system administration and development of plant, animal, compliance, and other science systems. These systems assist in the protection from increasing biosecurity risks to agriculture, the environment and Australia’s way of life through strengthening and improving quality and evidence-based policy advice and reform.
Biosecurity System and Development Support
The Biosecurity System and Development Support (BSDS) team is responsible for the system administration, ongoing improvement and training functions for digital systems critical for the management of biosecurity risk into Australia. These systems facilitate industry and the public to import animals and goods into the country effectively, efficiently, and to biosecurity standards. BSDS also manages branch wide processes such as communications for unplanned outages.
The Job
The main duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
monitoring incoming communication channels (emails, phone etc.), triaging issues and enquiries, and responding in a timely manner
providing technical support to internal and external users of critical biosecurity IT systems
working closely with technical teams within Digital Business Division (DRD), Digital Services Division and third-party developers to ensure system issues are prioritised correctly and resolved in an appropriate timeframe, contributing to the resolution process where possible
actively contributing to the diagnosis, management, resolution and communication of unplanned outages and incidents
maintaining accurate defect and enhancement records in system tracking software such as DevOps, while strictly adhering to business processes
supporting system releases by undertaking release activities such as creating test suites/plans, undertaking User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and Business Verification Testing (BVT), supporting Business Experience and Assurance Testing (BEAT), and preparation of release notes and instructional material
conducting system administration functions such as amending user permissions and conducting user audits and updating system configurable content and templates
generating reports as per approved stakeholder requests and updating reporting subscriptions as required
creating, updating and maintaining instructional material including system manuals and procedure documents
actively managing stakeholder expectations regarding issue resolution timeframes
escalating issues within the team at the appropriate time and actively sharing information within the team regarding emerging or urgent issues
after hours and weekend system verification testing (on a rotation basis across available staff).
Please note that this recruitment process will be used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions across the sections listed above. If an offer of non-ongoing employment is made, the successful applicant would be employed for an initial period of 12 months with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of 2 years in total. Some of these non-ongoing positions may become ongoing in the next 18 months. Should a position become ongoing then the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of 18 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis. The merit pool may also be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies in the division where the duties are of a similar nature.

Knowledge and experience
Experience conducting I.T. system administration and system testing is highly desirable but not essential.
