The site plays a critical role in keeping New Zealand powered, and it is a place where skilled technicians make a real difference every day by keeping our systems safe, reliable, and performing at their best.

Job Description

Te āhua o te tūranga | The nature of the role

As a Systems Technician at Wairakei, you will be trusted to look after the systems that keep the plant running safely and efficiently. Your days will blend hands on technical work with problem solving, collaboration, and forward thinking maintenance. You will work closely with operators, engineers, and contractors to maintain and improve control, instrumentation, and electrical systems that are critical to plant performance.

This is a role where no two days look the same. You might be maintaining control and protection systems, analysing system performance, updating plant documentation, or supporting improvements to maintenance strategies. You will also play a part in coaching others, supporting safe work practices, and contributing your ideas to help us continuously improve. You will join a team that values manaakitanga, shared responsibility, and doing the job right the first time.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe | About you

You are someone who enjoys working with complex systems and takes pride in keeping things running as they should. You care deeply about safety, quality, and doing work that stands the test of time. You communicate clearly, build strong working relationships, and are comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider team.

Must‑have foundations include a relevant technical qualification such as a National Diploma, NZCE, trade or technician certificate, along with experience maintaining control, instrumentation, or electrical systems in an industrial environment. You will have solid computer literacy, an ability to diagnose and resolve faults, and a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.

Nice‑to‑haves include experience with PLCs, SCADA or HMI systems, condition monitoring strategies, hazardous areas certification, or HV electrical equipment. Experience supervising contractors or developing maintenance strategies is also beneficial, but not essential.

Above all, we are looking for someone with curiosity, integrity, and a continuous improvement mindset. If you are keen to learn, willing to share your knowledge, and motivated by meaningful work, we would love to hear from you!
