Job Summary:
The Client is looking for a researcher and data scientist/ software engineer in its Lab to imagine and build innovative digital tools that will chart the future of research in Islamic law and history. At the SHARIAsource Lab, and in collaboration with related initiatives, we design and advance web applications, AI/NLP tools, and related data science tools to accelerate research on available Islamic law texts at Harvard (open-access) and elsewhere (libraries, databases, individual researchers). Working in coordination with the Program and Lab director on each project, Prof. Intisar Rabb, the research data scientist will work actively to advance designated projects in line with our mission: to provide resources and promote research in the academic study of Islamic law, and to facilitate new insights in Islamic law and history with the use of data science tools.
Successful candidates will able to work independently yet collaboratively, to lead work on designated projects with a small but active team of staff and collaborative partners, and to conduct the technical and subject-matter research necessary to build systems and write research papers on their basis. To those ends, proficiency in back-end databases, web-application development, and NLP/Client is expected; our most common stack includes Python, Mongo, SQL, Ruby, and Javascript; knowledge of Islamic studies or law and history, and of related right-to-left (RTL) languages, is highly desirable. A good design sense and user-centricity are important. Responsibilities will include teasing out hard problems, close knowledge of the technical and Islamic studies fields, and scoping and implementing products.
Job Specific Responsibilities:
As a Research Data Scientist, you will:
• Work closely with Program/Lab director and with external partners as needed to scope of projects and research needs, with opportunities to write papers on research outcomes
• Independently to manage projects and implement evolving requirements into a working suite of applications, in collaboration with other researchers and technical partners as needed
• Supervise Lab students and outside developers to advance existing and new projects
• Adapt and expand existing applications and create new software-based solutions, working with Lab director and research-users, to support the needs of research projects
• Research, design, develop, test, document, and deploy new applications and extensions to existing applications—including cutting-edge research on or incorporation of related Islamic studies-relevant digital humanities (DH) tools using Arabic, Farsi, or other RTL languages
• Develop appropriate unit tests, ensure QA, and further develop and adhere to coding standards and best practices for dev/ops in this emerging field
• Assist in writing proposals and grants to secure funding for scaling or developing existing and new tools
Additional Qualifications:
We are looking for people who have:
• In addition to an MA or PhD or commensurate experience of at least 2 years in computer / data science applications, an MA or PhD in Islamic studies or a related field is preferred.
• Professional experience with end-to-end development (front-end development, RESTful web services, Mongo and SQL database design and use, Client and NLP methods, as well as React, Redux, and other back-end technologies).
• Experience working with Agile methodologies (continuous integration, unit testing, SCRUM).
• Experience collaborating with research leadership and technical or research partners, sponsors, and end-users.
• Prior experience in the development of search tools, information architecture, and digital humanities or scientific software.
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of two years post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
Additional Information:
This is a one-year term appointment with potential for renewal, subject to dept need.
