The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Ophthalmic Dispensing Technician (Teaching Technologist-Ophthalmic) to contribute to the delivery of high-quality clinical education and support community eye health in Aotearoa within the University of Auckland Mobile Clinic, Vision Bus Aotearoa.

The Vision Bus Aotearoa (mobile clinic) delivers clinical teaching and services, including ophthalmic dispensing and research activities. This role is pivotal in supporting the community's eye health, as well as the faculty’s teaching and learning, and research communities, by providing expert technical guidance in ophthalmic dispensing and administrative, operational, and teaching support in the mobile clinic. You will work closely with academic staff and student optometrists to ensure the safe, effective, and timely delivery of dispensing services to the public and community. The main purpose of this role is to provide administrative, operational, and teaching support to enable the mobile clinic's operations and to deliver ophthalmic dispensing at multiple on- and off-campus sites. The role may also, at times, be based at the Grafton clinic when the bus needs repair and maintenance or is out of action.

This is a full-time, fixed-term (3 years) position.

The salary range for this role is between $73,400 - $90,700 based on skills and experience.

He kōrero mōu | About you | Our ideal candidate

You are a qualified dispensing optician with a strong technical foundation and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in clinical education. You bring a minimum of three years’ experience in the optical industry and possess the ability to translate complex technical knowledge into effective learning experiences.

We are seeking a candidate who:

Holds a graduate qualification in a relevant discipline and is eligible for registration with the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand.
Demonstrates proven technical proficiency in ophthalmic dispensing, including lens fitting, frame adjustments, and troubleshooting.
Experience working in a public-facing environment and the community with the requirement of high levels of customer service, supporting patients from a diverse range of ages (including underage group), cultures, and backgrounds, including Māori and Pacific communities.
Communicates effectively across diverse stakeholder groups and contributes positively to team environments.
Demonstrates experience working with external site/school coordinators and teaching and research staff to organise off-campus clinical activities, manage patient bookings and referrals, and provide high‑quality administrative and coordination support for related services.
Has experience supporting teaching and learning in a clinical or technical setting, with a sound understanding of pedagogical principles.
Is organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple responsibilities in a dynamic clinical teaching space.
Demonstrates a commitment to staying current with industry developments and emerging technologies in ophthalmic dispensing, applying this knowledge to enhance teaching and clinical practice.
Valid and Clean NZ full driver's licence (class 1) and be able to drive a relatively large vehicle (e.g., van).
As this position involves supporting community health initiatives and working with children, a Vulnerable Children Act (VCA) check (Children’s Worker Safety Check) in accordance with the Children’s Act 2014 is mandatory. The University of Auckland will administer the VCA check, and any offer of employment is conditional upon a satisfactory outcome.
