JOB TITLE: Technical Service Engineer

Shell Catalyst and Technologies (SC&T), part of the Shell group of companies, has an opening for a technical engineer to support its Ethylene Oxide (EO) catalyst business.

The purpose of the Technical Service Engineer (TSE) role is to create the desire to buy and become the trusted technical advisor of our customers. Our team provides technical support to a base of over 70 EO plants in the regions EMEIR and Americas, participate in marketing efforts and support commercial negotiations.

The TSE helps our customers to extract maximum value from SC&T EO catalyst and their EO/EG plant through close plant monitoring. Providing advice how to optimize catalyst performance and improve margins through small revamps, provide process support and troubleshooting for our customers to ensure their units are running safe, stable and with high quality products.

The Technical Service Engineer is involved in both pre-sales and post-sales phases for EO catalysts.

Specific accountabilities include:

Pre-Sales Phase (for catalyst re-fills)

• Understand customer’s operating conditions, economic goals and constraints for the next cycle and propose catalyst(s) which will fulfil their needs

• Discover other pains/needs customer may have using diagnostic conversations to propose other services or integrated offerings with other Shell businesses. In order to strengthen SC&T’s overall offering and add more value to customer

• Create the desire to buy our catalyst: co- design and analyse economic and technical benefits to overcome the customer’s pains or meet economic goals. This sets the stage for Sales Manager to capture our fair share commercially as SC&T offerings served as the enablers for our customer to maximize their margin

• Produce high and consistent quality technical proposals and technical information in contracts. Coordinate with and provide input to catalyst prediction team to obtain catalyst performance predictions for preparing technical proposal

• Coordinate with relevant Shell businesses or P&T delivery groups regarding integrated offerings. Coordinate with R&D and TSE community to obtain relevant information e.g., on SC&T catalysts industry performance and competitor intelligence to support sales of EO catalyst to customers. Lead and articulate technical advantages in our offering during contract negotiation with customer

Post-Sales Phase

• Display leadership in the area of HSSE when conducting TSE tasks, while working at both Shell and 3rd Party customer sites.

• Lead catalyst start-up and initial performance test-run at customer site. TSE is typically present at customer’s plant for 1- 2 weeks.

• Build strong working relationship with customer staff (technologist, production unit manager, plant manager, operations manager) be their single focal point; when help is required.

• Utilize regular unit monitoring meeting to engage wider customer stakeholders and to articulate the value we delivered.

• Troubleshooting support and catalyst optimization, advice during the catalyst operation cycle remotely or face-to-face visits at customer sites. Continue to uncover and diagnose customer pains or goals and offer solutions; in order to continue to be a source of value to customer or which SC&T can offer as part of the next catalyst fill.

• Discover and develop integrated opportunities, involving other business lines through collaboration with colleagues and ******** understanding of customers issues/or goals.

Other responsibilities:

• Participate in regional technical conferences; as part of organizing committee and/or as presenter.

• Work closely with Global Technical Service team, contribute actively to continuous updating and improvement of procedures/tools, e.g., start-up procedures, modelling tools, etc.

• Support on EO revamp projects and licensing projects on EO catalyst technical communications per requests from the licensing business

What we need from you

• Minimum bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with 5+ years’ experience in Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Glycol (EO/EG) chemical process. Master’s degree preferred.

• Experience with EO/EG technology is required for this role.

• Extensive experience of combined plant operations supports and/or process catalyst technical support.

• Background in catalyst technologies, computer modelling, kinetics and/or chemical process design would be valuable.

• Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills. Fluency in other languages spoken in the region can be advantageous.

• Evidence of a positive-minded and customer-oriented approach to problem solving and collaboration. For successful contributions, as a team member as well as proven success in delivering results independently with limited support in challenging situations.

• Ability to travel 20% of the time
