As our operations continue to expand rapidly, we’re seeking experienced Technical Trainers to deliver in-house instruction on heavy equipment technologies, systems, and tools. This role is key in driving technical excellence across our teams while reducing reliance on external training providers.
An excellent Trainer will:
Be technologically savvy, which includes the ability to use different programs, software, and technologies with their methods of instruction
Have the tools and resources necessary to enhance the learning of individuals with different learning styles and a desire to learn in repetitive, mandatory courses
Have exceptional communication skills

The Job:
The Technical Trainer will typically work a rotation of 7 days on followed by 7 off, 12 hours per shift, out of the Wood Buffalo Region (Fort McMurray). Occasional interprovincial travel will be required to other worksites throughout Canada.
If not local to the region, Heavy Metal will provide shared accommodations and transportation for the position.
Flexibility in scheduling is necessary based on course and worksite requirements. It is mandatory to access all mine sites.
As a Technical Trainer, you will be expected to:
Develop Training Materials: create lesson plans, presentations, assignments, and other materials to convey information
Manage training costs, ensuring efficiencies and minimal financial impact throughout the organization
Collaborate with management and supervision to identify company training needs
Schedule training sessions, considering shift/rotation schedules and participant availability to meet the needs of the division
Monitor training records to ensure there is no overlap in training
Maintain in-house training facilities and equipment
Delivering Training & Adapting to Learner Needs: use learning management systems and mobile learning apps, choosing appropriate training methods to suit the diverse needs of learners (virtual, simulated, mentoring, on-the-job training, etc.), outside of traditional, classroom-style learning opportunities
Assessing Learning: Assess team members’ willingness to learn and retain the knowledge and skills, ensuring accuracy in a helpful, constructive, and supportive manner
Assist team members in developing their skills and knowledge by completing competency evaluations for training and the use of equipment
Evaluate the effectiveness of the training programs and materials through assessments, feedback, and other methods
Set up and maintain a Skills Improvement Program (SIP)
Providing Support: offer ongoing support and guidance to learners while inspiring and motivating audiences for continuous learning
Provide instruction on effective troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques to ensure accurate diagnosis of equipment failures, emphasizing a proactive, solution-focused approach to prevent recurrence.
Staying Updated: continuously learn about new technologies and updates to ensure training materials and methods are current and relevant
Technical Expertise: has a strong knowledge and understanding of the equipment, systems, and work environments to provide accurate information and mentorship, striving for the highest levels of achievement and proficient technical abilities

Based in the Alberta Oil Sands (Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo Region), you’ll work 12 hours/day on Monday through Friday, in a safety-first environment.
What We’re Looking For:
A desire to make a difference and take pride in your work
A minimum of 3 years of experience as a proven technical trainer (systems operation, testing, troubleshooting & repair) for OEM Heavy Equipment
On-road & Off-road light and heavy-duty vehicles, construction, and mining equipment, and support equipment tire maintenance
Mobile HVAC (including CAT, Komatsu, John Deere, Hitachi, Kenworth, Peterbilt & Ford brands)
Mobile Fire Suppression (including Ansul & Kiddie)
Mobile Auto Grease (including SKF, Lincoln, Graco & Groeneveld)
Electrical (12/24 volt mobile equipment; proper use and care of multimeters)
Hydraulics (open, closed, load sensing; proper use and care of hydraulic flowmeters & gauge packs)
Personal competencies and abilities in operation and knowledge of equipment
Experience and exposure in the Oil Sands or mining environment
Mechanically inclined – experience as a Heavy Equipment Technician or mechanical background
Adequate knowledge of web delivery tools and e-learning platforms (lunchboxsessions.com)
Ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate)
Ability to engage and promote continuous learning using traditional and modern training methods and techniques
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, with a proactive approach to safety behaviors
Exceptional communication style and customer service
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products
Mine Site access (Syncrude, Suncor, CNRL, IOL, etc.)
