Technical writing and PM collaboration
Read and review content topics written by PMs. If content is too unclear to understand, is inconsistent, or is incomplete, the vendor will work directly with the PM author to gather more information, and edit or rewrite the topic, and then implement any agreed-upon changes.
Coordinate with original PM author to review and gain approval of the final output prior to publishing or delivery.
If feedback is received after a topic is already entered into GitHub, the vendor will make any needed edits directly in GitHub. Occasionally, content reviewers will provide this feedback in PDF or Word.
Revise content as needed to fit into online information architecture and existing topics.
GitHub content creation:
Follow content publishing workflow and comply with structured authoring guidance described in Business Applications Group GitHub Contributor Guide and Microsoft docs writing principles and markdown standards.
Convert content from Word to Markdown when needed.
Provide graphics support (checking screen shots for adherence to design guidance, cropping screen shots to remove irrelevant material such as task bars, etc.).
Be able to take content written by PMs in other tools such as Word, and revise as needed to fit into existing online information architecture and topics.
Editorial:
Edit online documentation for various enterprise-focused audiences, including technology decision-makers, CEOs and IT Pros.
Correct for grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Edit for adherence to Microsoft Writing Style Guide and the Dynamics 365 style sheet.
Ensure that text elements are formatted correctly.
Where applicable, use existing tools, such as Term Studio and Branding guidance, to check for appropriate terminology and word choice.
Ensure that documentation complies with Microsoft legal standards, such as use of fictitious names, product names, and trademarking.
Ensure that abbreviations and acronyms are spelled out on first mention, if appropriate, as per style guides.
When warranted, include a line edit for readability, simplicity, and adherence to guidelines for global English.
Be able to perform various levels of editing, from copy editing to substantive editing to developmental editing.
Meet deadlines.
Assist Content Lead with stylistic editing to improve alignment of content with Microsoft principles of voice: warm and relaxed, crisp and clear, and ready to lend a hand. Stylistic editing may include working with PMs and/or writers to eliminate jargon, check or correct reading level, adjust the formality of language, and refine the content to meet the needs of the target audience.
Required Qualifications
7+ years of experience writing and editing software product documentation or other public--facing content (enterprise/business audience preferred)
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, prioritize competing deadlines, and work independently
Stellar project management skills
Solid experience using GitHub for content creation
Proficiency using Microsoft Office software
Preferred:
BA/BS in technical communications, English or related discipline, or equivalent work experience
Previous Microsoft technical documentation experience
