Job Summary

The Theater Production Specialist serves as a primary technical lead for events presented at the Ferst Center for the Arts, a 900-seat professional performing arts venue. This position independently manages all aspects of their technical discipline across professional touring productions, campus presentations, student showcases, and corporate rentals, including advancing technical requirements with artists and clients, operating and supervising the use of professional theatrical systems, leading stage crews, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety compliance within stage operations. This position will interact on a regular basis with: guest artists and their production teams, rental clients, campus partners, students, staff, and faculty. This position typically will advise and counsel: rental clients, students, and campus partners. This position will supervise: part-time production staff and student workers.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Lead load-in and load-out for each production within their technical discipline; serve as primary crew lead during event execution for part-time production staff and student workers.

Job Duty 2 -

Program, operate, and supervise the use of professional theatrical systems within their technical discipline across a range of event types including professional touring productions, campus presentations, student showcases, and corporate rentals.

Job Duty 3 -

Advance technical requirements with artists, touring companies, and rental clients; assess technical needs, communicate venue capabilities and policies, and ensure protocols are established and maintained within stage operations.

Job Duty 4 -

Develop and maintain accurate production documentation including technical plots, equipment logs, inventories, maintenance schedules, and post-event summaries; use that information to support operational continuity and ongoing improvement of stage operations.

Job Duty 5 -

Identify and execute matters of health and safety within stage operations, including equipment maintenance, safe rigging practices, and compliance with campus safety regulations and risk management protocols; provide safety training and briefings to crew to ensure all practices are current and align with industry standards.

Job Duty 6 -

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Associate's degree or Vocational School Diploma in Theater, Technical Theater, or a related field. Proficiency with professional theatrical systems and software relevant to the assigned technical discipline required.

Required Experience

Two or more years of job-related experience in a technical theater discipline within a professional events venue setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater, Technical Theater, Production, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience. Experience with industry-standard show control and production software.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES

Ability to lead electric crews effectively during production calls, including part-time stage electricians. Ability to make independent decisions under pressure during live productions. Ability to provide quality customer service and maintain composure under stress. Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by event schedules. Flexibility in on-site daily service delivery hours required.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of stage electrics, lighting design principles, and production workflows in a professional venue setting. Knowledge of electrical safety standards, rigging practices, and risk management protocols for stage lighting systems.

SKILLS

Proficient in programming and operating professional lighting consoles, including the ETC APEX 20 and EOS platform. Proficiency in Vector Works Spotlight CAD software for lighting documentation and plot drafting. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical lighting requirements for non-technical clients and stakeholders. Time management and organizational skills to balance multiple productions and event types simultaneously.
