About the Role:
The Track Rider / Horse Trainer will play an important role in conditioning thoroughbred racehorses to peak fitness for racing. The successful candidate will ride horses in trackwork, assist with the training program, and oversee stable staff involved in horse care and daily operations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Supervise and mentor a small team of staff responsible for horse welfare, including feeding, grooming, and exercising.
· Train racehorses to respond effectively to verbal and non-verbal commands and address behavioural issues where required.
· Prepare racehorses to safely accept riders and become accustomed to starting gates and race environments.
· Train and condition racehorses to perform at a competitive level.
· Gradually expose horses to different obstacles, track conditions, and environments to build confidence and adaptability.
· Attend race meetings with horses and ensure their welfare and preparation both before and after races.
· Communicate with horse owners regarding the horse’s performance, condition, and development.
· Ride horses during trackwork to develop race fitness and maintain peak physical condition.
· Liaise with the primary trainer and jockeys to discuss horses’ performance, condition, and any concerns.
· Ensure stable hands provide appropriate daily care for horses, including feeding, rugging, and watering.
· Maintain high standards of horse grooming and overall welfare.
· Monitor horses for health or behavioural concerns and report any issues to the trainer.
· Ensure stable areas and yards are cleaned and maintained to appropriate standards.
· Exercise horses as part of their daily training and conditioning program.
· Comply with all racing industry rules, ethics, and integrity standards.
· Safely handle racehorses in stables and during trackwork, including undertaking groundwork such as hosing, drying, and general care.
· Attend to horses during race meetings, trials, and jumpouts.
· Ride horses in accordance with instructions provided by the trainer and the established training program.
· Follow all directions from trainers regarding the handling, training, and management of each horse.
· Ride horses at varying speeds including trot, canter, and controlled gallops such as three-quarter pace and even-time work.
· Educate and develop young horses both while riding and through groundwork training.
· Assist with horse conditioning activities such as using the walker or swimming horses as part of the afternoon routine.
Qualifications / Skills / Experience:
· Relevant qualification such as AQF Certificate III or IV in Horse Training / Track Riding, or overseas equivalent, or at least three years of relevant industry experience
· Minimum three years of recent full-time experience as a Track Rider or Horse Trainer
· Current Trackwork Rider Registration issued by Thoroughbred Racing SA (or ability to obtain)
· Demonstrated experience handling and riding thoroughbred racehorses
· Strong horsemanship skills and the ability to control horses in various situations
· Knowledge of workplace health and safety procedures within the racing industry
· Strong communication and teamwork skills
· Ability to work early mornings, weekends and race days as required
