This position works in the Garage organizational unit. This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy duty equipment. An incumbent performs general mechanical overhaul and maintenance work on a wide variety of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoe-loaders, motors, graders, trucks, and diesel and gas engines; troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic, electrical and brake systems; may occasionally supervise the work of equipment operators or assistants engaged in the overhaul or repair of mobile equipment; uses standard tune-up equipment for internal combustion engines. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the Journeyman level, with Red Seal Certification an asset; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy duty equipment; considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of a variety of automotive and related equipment; to lay out, assign and check the work of assistants performing unskilled and semi-skilled mechanical tasks. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools employed in repairing and adjusting automotive equipment. A valid Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement, Certificate of Qualification – Mechanic, and Authorized Inspector License Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) are all required for this position.
