A Trades Assistant working through AWF New Zealand plays an important support role on construction sites, workshops, factories, or maintenance projects. You work closely with qualified tradespeople such as electricians, carpenters, mechanics, or engineers, helping them get the job done safely, smoothly, and on time.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist qualified tradespeople with day-to-day tasks on site
Use basic hand tools and power tools under supervision
Prepare work areas by cleaning, setting up equipment, and organising materials
Help with lifting, carrying, and moving tools or construction materials
Support installation, repairs, or maintenance work depending on the job
Follow all health and safety rules to keep the site safe
Keep the work area tidy and help with general labouring tasks
Skills and qualities:
Willingness to do physical, hands-on work and learn on the job
Good fitness and stamina for active and busy work sites
Ability to follow instructions carefully and work as part of a team
Strong focus on safety to protect yourself and others on site
Reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude at work
Previous construction or labouring experience is helpful but not always required
This role is a strong starting point for anyone who wants to build a career in construction or skilled trades, even without formal experience.
