The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized, non-profit organization, has a job opening for a Truck Helper for the Family Store located in Fairlawn, VA.
Job Summary
Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards; assists in performing work in the thrift/family store and warehouse. When needed: Sorting responsibilities; receives, sorts, prices and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area. Cleans and maintains the stores and storage facilities. Assumes the responsibilities of the Truck Driver, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the assigned geographic area. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers. Ability to perform general maintenance and cleaning activities for buildings and grounds. Ability to follow instructions and work independently. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English. Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions. Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
Materials and Equipment
The Salvation Army vehicle, hand truck, cleaning supplies, equipment and tools.
Education and Experience
No formal education required, AND six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
License and Certification
Valid State Driver's License.
Must be able to pass criminal/credit history background check.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. Work is performed in a normal store environment with some exposure to outdoor temperatures, dirt and dust, and/or disagreeable sights and odors.
