Overview

We are seeking a meticulous and knowledgeable Trusts and Inheritance Tax (IHT) Specialist to join our technologically progressive and fast-growing legal practice. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in complex trust structures and estate planning, particularly those with experience in advising on tax efficiency, asset protection, and succession planning involving high-value or diversified estates.

Our firm has built a strong foundation in private client services, with a specialist Estate Planning department that integrates AI-driven tools and client platforms. We deal extensively with bespoke Wills, Trusts, and Probate services for clients with multi-asset portfolios, business holdings, agricultural interests, and residential and investment properties.

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical and strategic advice on the setup, operation, and administration of a wide variety of trust types, including:

Discretionary Trusts (DTs)

Asset Protection Trusts (APTs)

Property Protection Trusts (PPTs)

Revocable Life Interest Trusts (RLITs)

Nil Rate Band Discretionary Trusts (NRBDTs)

Business and Agricultural Property Relief Trusts

Multi-property and investment portfolio trusts

Draft and review complex Wills and Letters of Wishes tailored to tax planning objectives.

Advise on inheritance tax mitigation strategies including use of the Nil Rate Band, Residence Nil Rate Band, and s.144 appointments.

Guide clients on the interplay between trust structures and capital gains tax, income tax, and IHT liabilities.

Oversee trust documentation, registrations, HMRC compliance (TRS), and trust tax return requirements.

Collaborate with internal legal and financial teams, as well as liaise with external advisers such as accountants and financial planners.

Supervise and mentor junior staff and consultants where appropriate, maintaining high compliance and quality assurance standards.

Ensure efficient use of CRM systems and document automation tools for case management and client reporting.

Candidate Requirements

Law Degree or STEP Diploma strongly preferred.

Significant experience in private client work with a focus on trust law and tax planning.

Proficient in trust drafting and legal structuring involving high-value estates, property portfolios, and business interests.

Solid understanding of UK tax law including IHT, CGT, and Income Tax as applicable to trusts.

Skilled in digital legal platforms (CRM, Microsoft Office, legal automation tools).

Demonstrable ability to manage complex client instructions and deliver tailored, compliant estate planning solutions.

Organised, analytical, and confident in both client advisory and technical drafting.

Not essential but meeting at Cheshire Offices possibly once a week.
