Job description

London - Southall UB1 1HA or Sutton SM39HG

Due to the hands-on nature of this role, Vehicle Mechanics are required to work on site using workshop facilities and equipment. Therefore, remote or home working is not applicable. However, we are supportive of Smarter Working principles and are happy to consider flexible working hours, where operational needs allow. We aim to help staff maintain a healthy work-life balance while ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering support across the unit.

Job Summary

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, with responsibility for an annual budget of over £10bn, the Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence and one of its largest operating centres who employ around 12,000 Civil Servants located at over 300 locations supporting the 110K regular and reserve soldiers across the Army. This Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff.

We are recruiting qualified Vehicle Mechanics to join our dedicated London District Light Aid Detachment (LAD), supporting the British Army across Greater London.

Based at either Southall or Sutton, you’ll be part of a small, close-knit team of two to three mechanics, working alongside a Workshop Manager. Together, you’ll inspect, service, and repair a wide range of military vehicles and equipment, primarily Land Rovers and MAN SV trucks, but also a varied fleet of specialist platforms.

These are 37-hour, Monday-to-Friday roles with no weekend working. Whether you’re an experienced civilian mechanic or from an ex-military background, we welcome applicants who want to work in a team where your skills make a difference.

Job Description

You’ll primarily maintain and inspect Land Rovers and MAN SV trucks, while supporting a wider fleet of specialist military vehicles and equipment. Training will be provided to help you gain both Military Vehicle Inspector (MVI) status and a full Category C (HGV) driving licence, if not already held. Both will be essential to the role once appointed.

Your Core Duties Will Include:

• Servicing, diagnosing faults, and repairing a wide range of Army vehicles and plant

• Conducting mandated inspections to Defence and civilian engineering standards

• Using the Joint Asset Management and Engineering Solution (JAMES) – strong IT skills are essential but training on this platform is available

• Maintaining accurate documentation and audit-ready maintenance records

• Deploying to other sites across London when required to support dependent units

• Applying Safety, Health, Environment and Fire (SHEF) policies at all times

• Using and safeguarding tools, test equipment, and workshop machinery safely

• You’ll work predominantly on Land Rover variants and MAN Support Vehicles, but gain experience across a broad fleet, ensuring variety and engagement in your day-to-day role

We provide full training to support you in gaining your Military Vehicle Inspector (MVI) qualification and a full Category C (HGV) licence if not already held. Both of these will become essential to the role once appointed.

There may also be opportunities for career progression within the organisation, and depending on the response to this campaign, the role may be considered for apprenticeship development for suitable candidates.

As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came in to effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical. This role does not meet that category and we will not sponsor a visa. It is therefore NOT open to applications from those who will require sponsorship under the points based system.

Should you apply for this role and be found to require sponsorship, your application will be rejected and any provisional offer of employment withdrawn.

The Ministry of Defence requires all candidates who are successful at interview to declare any outside interests. These declarations will be discussed with successful candidates following the interview process and before a formal offer of employment is made, as some outside interests may not be compatible with MOD civilian roles. This will not, in the majority of cases, prevent employment in MOD, but it is a measure that must be taken to ensure that appropriate mitigations can be put in place to manage any potential, perceived or actual conflicts of interest from the first day of employment.

The Ministry of Defence adopts a zero-tolerance approach to unacceptable behaviours, which includes bullying, harassment, ****** harassment, discrimination, and victimisation. You will not be eligible and will not be considered for this post if you have been dismissed from a role for such unacceptable behaviours within the last five years. This will also apply if you resign or otherwise leave a role but, because of an adverse decision, would have been dismissed for gross misconduct had you continued in that employment. Pre-employment checks will be carried out.

Application sifting will be scheduled to take place within 7 days of the application closing date. Interview dates are to be confirmed but these will be held in person. We endeavour to keep to these time frames, but these are subject to change around business needs.

Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
