This position supports public openings at Milner Gardens & Woodlands by assisting other staff in their duties, filling in for volunteer shifts as needed, and assisting with basic site maintenance.
Duties:
Work involved in this position may include:
Open/close buildings at start or end of day, and greet volunteers starting or ending shifts
Selling gifts and plants at Gift Shop, or admissions and memberships at Welcome & Interpretive Centre
Transporting guests on shuttle carts
Assist with parking control
Selling and serving tea and other refreshments in the Camellia Tea Room
Helping Tea Room Supervisor in kitchen by washing dishes, preparing for service, and cleaning afterwards
Assisting with keeping public displays and areas presentable
Assisting with special events set up, running, and tear down as needed
Assisting Horticulture staff with plant watering and basic site clean up
Designated as substitute Tea Room Supervisor as/when required
Required Qualifications:
Grade 12 diploma
Two year’s experience in customer service
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Able to work independently and as a team player.
Must be able to competently and safely operate a shuttle cart; Requiring either a valid Driver’s License or medical confirmation of ability
Must be physically able to assist with event set up and public offerings, including:
Capable of helping set up tents, tables, chairs, and other event materials
Capable of carrying up to 25lbs for short durations
Able to move up and down stairs frequently through a day
Able to stand on feet for up to 7hrs/ day
Able to work outside in various weather conditions for up to 7hrs/day
Able to work weekends
First aid certification, OFA Level One
Food Handler Certificate
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in an educational setting
Experience working in a volunteer environment
A diploma in a relevant subject such as event, tourism, or hospitality management, or culinary arts from an appropriately accredited institution.
Experience working in hospitality and/or food service industries
Experience working in landscape maintenance or gardening
All staff at Milner Gardens & Woodland are expected to:
Act in a way that maintains and strengthens positive relationships with all users of the operation including volunteers, students, members, donors, sponsors, partner organizations, other VIU departments, and visiting public
Promote and participate in volunteer recruitment by welcoming potential applicants, sharing information, orienting, motivating, and guiding new volunteers
Support marketing initiatives including tours, presentations, and trade shows
Assist in building and maintaining healthy new relationships with other related entities and organizations
Support Milner Gardens & Woodland activities including meetings, workshops, celebrations, and special events.
Opening and closing site as needed
