BREATHE Midwives is looking for dedicated community members who are interested in collaborating with other likeminded individuals interested in supporting Black Sexual, Reproductive, Birthing, and Infant Health.
About Us
BREATHE Midwives is a community-rooted charitable organization advancing equitable, culturally responsive maternal healthcare for Black communities. Through direct care, community programming, and advocacy, BREATHE works to address inequities in maternal health and expand access to holistic, community-centered care.

Commitment
The commitment is for a 2-year term which can be renewed at the end of each term.
Board members will meet about 6 times a year. Meetings last about 2hrs and take place during the evenings and/or weekends.
Communication and engagement occur by phone, email, online meetings, and in person (when applicable).
Each member commits approximately 4-5 hours per month to their leadership and committee responsibilities.
Directors do not receive remuneration to participate—all Board positions are strictly voluntary.
Volunteer Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and strategic Board Member to join our organization’s governance team. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in guiding organizational direction, ensuring accountability, and fostering sustainable growth. This position offers an opportunity to contribute leadership expertise, influence key decisions, and support the organization’s mission through active participation in board activities and committees.

Requirements
Have a strong commitment to the organizations mission, goals, values and strategic priorities.
Attend, engage and participate in the Board meetings and committees
Review management’s strategic plans and initiatives, contribute input on, and monitor performance.
Provide financial oversight to ensure organizational financial health.
Work collaboratively and respectfully as a part of the team
Contribute ideas and assist with fundraising and community advocacy initiatives
Build a relationship with the community, partners and stakeholder
Demonstrate a commitment to learning, and opportunities for continued development.
Act as an ambassador for the organization as advocator for antiracism, anti-discrimination, social justice and equity
Prior experience in governance or non-profit management is a plus but not required
Responsibilities
Attend regular board meetings and participate actively in discussions and decision-making processes
Provide strategic oversight and guidance to executive leadership on organizational goals and initiatives
Assist in the development and review of policies, procedures, and organizational strategies
Support business development efforts by leveraging professional networks and industry knowledge
Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness
Engage in negotiations related to partnerships, funding, or contractual agreements as needed
Oversee financial stewardship, including reviewing budgets, financial reports, and ensuring compliance with governance standards
Champion the organization’s mission, values, and vision within the community and stakeholder networks
Qualifications
We welcome all community members from diverse experiences and backgrounds.
Directors must be over 18 years of age and may live anywhere in Canada.
