The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Wastewater Treatment Plant Utility Person to fill a permanent full-time position. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Utility Person performs various labouring duties in the Treatment Plant to support area Maintenance and Operations activities. Key accountabilities are to perform work functions that ensure compliance to established policies and procedures, OH&S and the AENV Approval to Operate.

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

Grade 12 or equivalent

Level I WWT Alberta Environment Operator’s Certificate

Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required and others to be defined by the Province or by the City

1-year industrial experience, preferably in a Treatment Plant or comparable process environment

Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license

Required PPE: safety footwear, coveralls, face shield, respirator, safety glasses, gloves, gas monitor

This position requires the handling and use of chemicals. Other hazards include electrocution, drowning, rotating equipment and confined spaces.

The use of SCBA is required when working in potentially deadly atmospheres. Some activities require the use of a safety harnesses and other safety equipment.

Work outside regular hours may be required

This role makes demands on personal time to assist outside of normal hours

Experience working with processes that can be diverse, complex and very large

Ability to work effectively and safely under pressure when performing emergency repairs

Well-developed verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions

Demonstrate a mechanical aptitude

Strong computer aptitude including proficiency with MS Office software

Must be physically fit in order to climb ladders, work at heights, open and close valves, lift, shovel, bend and twist in awkward positions

Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet, cold, hot and disagreeable

Able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics, maps and manuals

Remuneration:

$2+.03 to $32.++ per hour

Hours of Work:

80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
