The Role

The Weed and Pest Officer ensures effective and efficient delivery of annual roadside weed and pest control that is consistent with the current Northern Grampians Shire Council Roadside Weeds and Pests Program.

Key Responsibilty area:

Control and restrict the spread of priority weeds and pests throughout Northern Grampians Shire Council in accordance with Council’s Roadside Weeds and Pests Program through identification, monitoring and effective treatment of infestations and outbreaks.

Establish sound working relationships with key stakeholders, Landcare groups, land managers, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR), Parks Victoria (PV), neighbouring Shire Councils and the community with the aim of identifying local issues.

Investigate and pursue further funding streams and resources to enable future works on Council controlled Crown land that complement landcare efforts.

Carry out forward planning with the Coordinator Environment & Community Safety to establish and update programs as required considering natural resource management, including biodiversity, flora and fauna and ecosystem values.

Engage, supervise and monitor contractors to complete approved projects and programs within budgets and timeframes.

Supervise, prepare progress reports to appropriate agencies (DEECA), and work within defined project budgets and time frames to implement approved funded projects and programs.

Acquit funding upon completion, and within timeframes, using approved agency templates.

Maintain accurate and detailed records of work activities including data entry into Council’s computer systems.

Ensure compliance with all relevant process control documents and ensure that appropriate standards and work method statements are adopted to achieve adequate safety and environmental controls.

Respond to all service requests in a timely and efficient manner that causes minimum inconvenience to Council’s activities.

Selection criteria

A passion for the natural environment with knowledge and experience in weed and pest control

Experience in delivering projects

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills

Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability) or a related field is desirable
