CBC News has an excellent opportunity for a 1-year full time weekend field producer based in our Toronto newsroom.
You will work with the CBC News network team, in close collaboration with the local Toronto team, to deliver everything from live developing coverage to packaged stories in various formats. You must be as confident juggling the demands of a major breaking news situation as you are pitching and pursuing original stories, particularly those relevant to underrepresented communities in the GTA. Your work will also involve remote producing reporters in other provinces and you will at times be asked to deploy, sometimes with little notice, to cover stories across Ontario, Canada and beyond.
You must have strong news judgment and a range of journalistic and production skills. You can spot holes in a reporter's script or digital story and help them enhance it. You are a leader with an inclusive approach to teamwork, yet you are also capable of working effectively on your own. We are looking for someone who pitches stories and is capable of running a team in the field. Leadership skills are a must.
You will have a strong understanding of Toronto and Ontario news, politics and culture, as well as a good sense of broader stories across Canada. You’ll champion stories that are relatable and relevant to the audience we have but also the audiences we want to reach. You’ll have a sense of emerging trends and important issues as they come up.
Your stories will be in video, audio and text formats. You will file to CBC NN, The National, radio news programs, streaming platforms, social platforms, digital sites and local programs.
This position is compressed hours, where 37.75 weekly hours are worked Thursday to Sunday. Monday to Wednesday are days off. The position will go from September 2026 to September 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a field producer in Toronto, you will be expected to:
Work closely with the network assignment editor and at times, the local assignment editor, to ensure strong daily news coverage.
Keep track of important files and regularly pitch stories and ideas.
Work closely with reporters, videographers and other news staff on all aspects of story development. You are comfortable reading and vetting scripts and digital drafts and can help spot visual and editorial holes in pieces.
Deploy to other parts of Ontario, Canada and even internationally to provide coverage as required. When in the field, you are comfortable leading and coordinating your team.
Help develop and pitch story ideas and produce original journalism for all platforms, with an emphasis on stories that will retain and attract new audiences. You think about communities within the GTA in particular that we are currently undeserving.
Conduct research, develop contacts, set up interviews, arrange travel when necessary and prepare shoot schedules and budgets for the coverage of stories.
Coordinate live hits or other logistical matters for various platforms as required.
Assemble audio, video and text packages, either alone or working with editors.
Push for creative treatments and innovative storytelling techniques.
Monitor for breaking news and work with the assignment editor to own the coverage and aftermath of these stories.
Requirements/Qualifications
The following assets and abilities are required for this position:
Good eye for strong GTA stories and knowledge of how to pitch and produce them for national audiences.
Refined sense of production values and creative storytelling.
Superior editorial judgment.
Ability to set priorities, plan and meet deadlines under challenging circumstances, including navigating competing demands.
Ability to plan, coordinate and execute live or packaged reports in video, audio and text for CBC platforms, working with other news staff.
Comfort using video and audio editing tools, video and audio content management tools, digital publishing tools, photo editing software.
Knowledge of user-generated content, ability to research social and online trends and track social media stories, firm grasp of CBC social media policies.
Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Superior interpersonal skills with a successful track record of working as part of a small team on a daily basis but also forging and maintaining excellent relationships with the broader program, network and local teams.
A keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
The ability to shoot and edit basic video elements is an asset, as is the ability to report and the ability to vet a script.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of relevant journalism experience.
Please include a link to five pieces you’ve worked on – including a video story, audio story, text story, social treatment and live story
