School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) is nestled in the Southeast corner of British Columbia. We are a vibrant area, covering 6 "families of schools" in the centres of Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo/Meadow Creek, Nelson, Salmo, and the Slocan Valley. Position Description:




The District Hearing Resource Teacher is a member of District Staff in a working under the direction of the Director of Instruction, Equity, Inclusion and Reconciliation or designate. The District Hearing Resource teacher works collaboratively with students and staffs in supporting deaf and hard of hearing students. The District Hearing Resource teacher works from a strengths-based perspective, with a view toward students achieving Dogwood graduation and students being with their peers in classroom settings as much as possible. The District Hearing Resource teacher uses Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies, Social Emotional Learning strategies, and collaborative strategies to increase the capacity of school staff to support students with hearing difficulties and disabilities.


This position requires an enthusiastic, inclusive, experienced and dedicated educator. This assignment is a district position with responsibilities to students and staff in schools in the district.


This position is a 0.40FTE position from Sept 1 - Nov 7, 2026, and is due to a leave. This district position is based out of Creston. Travel is required (typically Creston, Crawford Bay and possibly Salmo).


Duties & Responsibilities of a District Teacher in Inclusive Education:

Follow the goals and strategies of the Enhancing Student Learning (ESL) plan and the new District Strategic Plan.

Incorporate First Peoples Principles of Learning.

From an equity leadership lens, work with staff to incorporate inclusive and accessible learning strategies and philosophies.

Support teachers to implement best practices for learning, including inclusion, indigenization, and universal design for learning (UDL).

Support/share/present professional learning for teachers where possible.

Promote collaborative learning opportunities with school staff.

Work collaboratively with staff in Inclusive Education, including Aboriginal Education staff and Early Learning staff.

Use research-based methods and current practices.

Demonstrate awareness of cross-cultural factors affecting student learning.

Have an understanding of the new K-12 Reporting Policy & Framework.

Have an understanding of the new Accessibility Act and its implications in Inclusive Education and K-12 settings.



Duties and Responsibilities of the District Hearing Resource Teacher:


Instruct students in formation and development of sound for speech using hearing aids and other devices

Work from an equity-based and strengths-based framework with students who are deaf and hard of hearing in an inclusive setting, utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts

Work with school staff to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing students have access to a rich and inclusive learning environment

Develop individualized education and intervention plans based on special needs of students to facilitate their re-adaptation and independence objectives

Participate in Inclusive Education team staff meetings, as well as professional learning and teacher training workshops as appropriate

Lead students in activities to promote their physical, mental and social/emotional development and self-advocacy

Assess and identify students’ individual learning strengths and needs along with classroom teachers and other staff

Evaluate the progress of students and report results with students, parents, school staff and district staff according to the new K-12 Reporting Policy

Complete kindergarten hearing screenings at each assigned school

Instruct students using the expanded core curriculum for students who are deaf and hard of hearing

Follow the current Special Education Services: A Manual of Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines from the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care

Follow BC Ministry of Education and Child Care Audit Checklists for students who are deaf and hard of hearing and ensure that student files are completed according to audit requirements

Other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent or designate(s)



Education:


Required Education and Membership

BC Professional Teaching Certificate (current)

Current certification with the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH)



Preference given to applicants who have or who are currently pursuing:


Master’s Degree in Special Education in Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Extensive training and background in diversity /equity education, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
