Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, perform tasks for month-end close, analyze balance sheet and revenue and expense variances, reconcile sub-ledger reports to the general ledger, and prepare schedules for the annual financial audit and tax returns. Work closely with Controller, Accounting Managers, and program teams to ensure internal controls and operational processes comply with fiscal policies and procedures. Perform other duties as required.
Core Activities:
• Perform the following components of the month end closing process:
• Reconcile sub-ledgers and data from other software platforms to general ledger accounts.
• Prepare journal entries to record current month activity as needed.
• Analyze high risk balance sheet accounts.
• Investigate and resolve variances in balance sheet accounts and other general ledger accounts as assigned.
• Prepare higher complexity audit and tax return schedules as assigned, including but not limited to investment, pledges receivable, and net asset note disclosures.
• Assist with preparation of audited financial statements, including but not limited to the functional expense statement and various note disclosures.
• Review, identify, and research monthly financial statement and account variances.
• Perform higher complexity accounting tasks related to high-risk accounts such as investments and fixed assets and record financial transactions to comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Research and prepare recommended accounting treatment for complex transactions to ensure compliance with GAAP.
• Identify and lead the implementation of process improvements to increase efficiencies.
• Lead projects within the accounting department and provide accounting expertise to cross-functional department projects.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
• Bachelor’s degree, Accounting or Finance preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• CPA or advanced degree a plus
• 4 - 6 years’ experience as an Accountant
• Adept at working both independently and as part of a team
• Advanced knowledge of not-for-profit accounting practices
• Advanced in Excel, Word, and other Microsoft applications
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
• Attention to detail and well-organized
• Advanced knowledge of financial audit controls, policies, and procedures
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, while producing an accurate work product
• Ability to lead teams and projects
• Ability to organize and interpret financial data
• A general interest in the not-for-profit industry and an interest in the mission of the organization, “To Inspire Conservation of the Ocean”
• Knowledge of Sage Intacct, Tessitura and Fundriver a plus

Annual Compensation Range:
$73,600- $+1,000 USD annually. The starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
