Job Description

Full job description
Auckland, New Zealand Permanent
Haere Mai!

We are the Kaitiaki / Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation. We are proud of our Te Whāinga / Our purpose: Sustainable investment delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders. We invest government contributions to the NZ Super Fund, a global investment fund helping to ensure the country can pay for the growing cost of universal superannuation (New Zealand Superannuation) in the future. We also oversee the Elevate Fund, which invests in small, fast-growing New Zealand companies.

At the Guardians there’s an energy, passion and a shared commitment to excellence: in 2024 the NZ Super Fund was named the world’s best-performing sovereign wealth fund. The work is complex, innovative and intellectually stimulating. Sustainable finance, including a commitment to being net zero by 2050, is core to our Mātāpono / way of working.

About the position

Strategic Tilting is an internally managed, dynamic asset allocation strategy that draws on the Fund’s long horizon and the mean‑reversion of risk premiums over time. We tilt across 35 markets and a broad set of asset classes — equities, interest rates, currencies and credit — anchored by long‑term valuation models and executed in a disciplined, systematic way.
In this role, you will:
Maintain and improve portfolio management data, tools and models — enhance data quality, develop libraries, improve systems and processes to support trading decisions .
Conduct investment research — improve valuation assumptions and investigate methodologies to generate return signals and allocate positions.
Assist with management of market exposures — ensure positions are accurate and aligned to our valuation signals and frameworks.
Monitor markets and macro developments — participate in and lead discussions on investment topics in an environment where constructive challenge is important to improve decision‑making.
Communicate clearly — produce reporting and presentations for senior management, Board, and the wider organisation.
Partner effectively — with other teams on trade execution, investment research, coding, frameworks and technology.
About you
You’re purpose‑led, intellectually curious and able to thrive in a systematic investment environment. You bring analytical skills, discipline, and are comfortable with uncertainty and complexity.
Financial markets experience — a solid grasp of macroeconomics, portfolio construction and financial modelling.
Analytical strength and process thinking — ability to work independently and as part of a group, attention to detail, ability to apply reasoning and logic to complex problems where there may be no clear answer.
Technical capability in coding and data analysis, ideally with SQL, Python and Excel, plus good habits around documentation and model governance.
We are looking for a tertiary qualification with relevant experience. The following would be advantageous: familiarity with dynamic asset allocation or systematic strategies, exposure to derivatives/markets, experience producing decision‑ready papers, completion of or progress towards CFA charter.
What we offer

A dynamic, exciting place to work with a team united by our common purpose of sustainable investment delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders.
Competitive remuneration package including base salary, discretionary bonus programme, and up to 8% KiwiSaver matching.
World class professional development, career pathways and job rotation opportunities.
Comprehensive leave and benefits programme including strong parental leave package and insurance cover.
Flexible and accessible work environment that reflects our commitment to equity and an inclusive team.

How to apply:
We encourage and welcome applications from people with diverse experience, including applicants interested in discussing flexible work options and those with specific disability needs. As a proudly committed equal opportunity employer, we challenge discrimination and actively work to eliminate bias in our hiring practices. Diversity of experience and diversity of background help us to solve complex problems and deliver on our purpose.

We recognise the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and invest in partnership with a range of Iwi/Māori organisations. We warmly welcome and value Mana Whenua who wish to work with us. We are committed to understanding Te Ao Māori and integrating it into our workplace culture, for the benefit of all future generations in Aotearoa.
