As a Automation Technical Specialist, you’ll provide the onboard automation and technical support for Kalmar’s equipment at the customer site(s). In this critical on-site role, you are responsible for the hands-on configuration, diagnosis, and expert resolution of complex technical issues affecting the control systems, software (Windows/Linux), PLCs, and industrial network protocols that drive the automated terminal equipment fleet.

What are your key responsibilities:

Automation & Technical Support: Serve as the on-site point of contact for high-level technical issues and queries related to on-board equipment automation and control systems.

Troubleshooting & Resolution: Provide hands-on support to the Kalmar Maintenance team to help resolve issues and proactively raise or escalate issues that require further assistance to ensure timely execution and completion.

Performance Monitoring & Improvement: Monitor and analyze equipment and control system performance by studying trends, investigate and provide feedback on repeating issues, and propose solutions or justifications for improvement items.

System Maintenance: Monitor and maintain Kalmar software versions across the fleet of equipment.

Stakeholder Liaison: Interface between the Kalmar Automation support team and the Maintenance team, and provide regular status updates or reports to Kalmar stakeholders and the customer.

Collaboration & Development: Participate in technical discussions and installations related to add-on sales, retrofits, or improvements, and share expertise and learnings with colleagues, including providing coaching and improving process documentation.

What you bring to the role:

Qualifications: A Degree in Electrical/Automation Engineering or Equivalent vocational background and experience. NSW Electrical Supervisors licence is preferred. You must be fluent in English.

Experience: More than 2 years’ experience of configuring, testing, and troubleshooting automation systems, with experience working with multi-national teams in different environments.

Technical Skills & Knowledge: High IT skill level, including an understanding of Windows, Linux, and industrial network protocols, and experience with various PLCs and automated vehicle control components. Knowledge of container handling equipment and operations is also required.

Personal Competencies: A proactive troubleshooter with a problem-solving ability and a willingness to be hands-on. You must be a team player, proactive with a can-do attitude, and able to cope with stress and work well under pressure.

Additional Requirements: Flexibility around working hours and the ability to travel as required. You must be able to build and maintain a positive relationship with the customer.
