AHS provides alternative job opportunities for those International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are not able to obtain independent licensure on their own and / or are unable to obtain a residency position.
Clinical Assistants are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS), functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals.
Making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Clinical Assistants are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff.
In this position, you will deliver care to patients in pre-assessment clinics (PAC) primarily at SHC and PLC with some coverage at FMC and RGH sites within a multidisciplinary team in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
Description :
You will be working alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers. Job duties are to conduct a pre-anesthetic consult including a focused history and physical and review of relevant laboratory results, diagnostic tests / imaging.
Having reviewed this information with the attending anesthesiologist, co-develop the peri-anesthetic plan including, but not limited to, preoperative optimization and preparation, writing appropriate orders, entering these orders into the patient’s electronic record, identification of anesthetic management options including post-operative disposition and perioperative pain management, informing the patient of the plan, understanding and documenting patient preferences.
Clinical research is important in this field of practice, and the care of patients registered in research trials is an important part of the role.

English Language Proficiency. Applicants must have achieved a minimum score within 24 months of registration in either the Academic version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Occupational English Test (OET) Medicine examination, or CELPIP General examination.
Test results must be certified (notarized) by a Notary Public or any other government authorized entity. Details are provided on the CPSA website ( Medical Degree and Transcripts.
Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school outside Canada and the USA, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research - International Medical Directory.
Postgraduate Medical Education. Applicants must have completed at least 1 full year of hands-on training (outside Canada and the USA) after having completed their undergraduate medical training, no exceptions.
Specialty training must show evidence of being hands-on and supervised.
