Position Summary:
The Controller is a critical financial leader at DAHFH, overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and donor requirements. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial reporting and data integrity, supporting the CFO with strategic financial planning, forecasting, and organizational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and Habitat for Humanity International standards.
Ensure timely, accurate reporting to the Board of Directors, executive leadership, and external stakeholders.
Lead the annual audit process and IRS Form 990 preparation.
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including grant-specific requirements (e.g., HUD, ARPA).
Accounting & Internal Controls
Manage day-to-day accounting operations: general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll (as related to the general ledger), and balance sheet reconciliations.
Maintain and enhance internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
Ensure accurate classification and reporting of restricted/unrestricted funds and in-kind donations.
Oversee monthly grant reconciliations and expense allocations across programs and funding sources.
Monitor funding sources and expenditures for all construction projects.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CFO and department heads.
Monitor actual vs. budgeted results; provide departments with budget management support.
Conduct monthly performance reviews with senior leadership and make necessary adjusting entries.
Provide financial analysis to support strategic initiatives and new program development.
Assist with cash flow forecasting and job-in-progress projections.
Grant & Donor Fund Management
Collaborate with Development and Program teams to review grant expenditures.
Assist with preparing financial reports for government agencies, foundations, and donors.
Ensure compliance with federal grant standards, including Uniform Guidance.
Leadership & Cross-Team Collaboration
Supervise a small internal accounting team and provide professional development as needed.
Oversee and coordinate with the external accounting team on a daily basis.
Partner with departments including Construction, Homeowner Services, Development, and Retail (ReStore) to promote financial best practices.
Act as an internal resource for financial literacy, compliance, and operational support.
Stay informed on policy updates and implement changes as necessary.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; nonprofit experience preferred.
Familiarity with Sage Intacct accounting software highly preferred.
Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Technical Proficiency
Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
Experience with accounting software; Sage Intacct preferred.
Certifications
CPA strongly preferred, but not required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate accounting staff.
Assign and manage work responsibilities, and address performance and personnel issues in accordance with organizational policies.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Typical office environment with moderate noise level.
Hybrid work schedule: in-office presence required Tuesday through Thursday.
