About the Role: We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Controller to oversee and lead our accounting and financial operations. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, including A/R, A/P, GL, project cost accounting, revenue recognition, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls. The Controller will play a key role in financial planning and analysis, ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, and provide direct support to leadership on both corporate and personal financial matters.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in financial management, project-based accounting, and leadership. This role also involves collaboration with external professionals such as accounting firms, legal advisors, and financial consultants, as well as managing personal and investment portfolios for the business owner.
Role & Responsibilities:
Oversee all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Project Cost Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institute and maintain other planning and control procedures, and analyze and report variances.
Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts and report significant budget differences to management.
Perform a monthly close of the general ledger and trial balance on cash and accrual basis so that financial statements can be produced from the accounting software.
Work with the accounting firm on year end tax returns, annual financial statements, and other ad-hoc projects
Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings in cooperation with external professionals.
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process with the CEO; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
Accounting for the owner’s personal, real estate, and investment portfolios.
Engage with financial advisors, legal experts, and other external professionals as required.
Provide leadership and support to accounting and finance team members.
Skills, Education, and Experience Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
At least 7 years of accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
MANDATORY: Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint.
Extensive experience with accounting software and databases.
Understanding of project-based accounting and project-based accounting software.
Proven knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws, and regulations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to present and explain financial information to non-finance professionals.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Preferred: Experience with Paylocity.
Preferred: Experience in the A/E/C industry with focus in construction management
