Controller — Startup
Chicago, Illinois, United States (Hybrid)
The Company
A fast-growing Chicago-based Fintech startup.
The Role
First dedicated accounting hire and the leader of the function. You'll build the accounting org from scratch—owning the books, the tools, the team, and the processes that will scale with the company. Reports directly to Finance leadership with a seat at the table on strategic decisions.
What You'll Own
• Lead the full accounting cycle (close, reconciliations, GL, financial reporting)
• Select and implement the company's accounting tech stack (ERP, close, expense tools)
• Build internal controls and lead the first external audit end to end
• Own tax and regulatory compliance
• Partner with Finance leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic analysis
• Hire and develop the accounting team as the company scales
What You Bring
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a mix of Big 4 and industry
• CPA preferred, or in progress
• Strong technical accounting expertise, especially around revenue recognition and complex transactions
• Track record of selecting and implementing accounting systems (NetSuite, Intacct, etc.)
• Prior experience leading or preparing a company through its first audit
• Comfortable building from zero—you like ambiguity, ownership, and rolling up your sleeves
