Job Description
The Position:
Reporting to the Shop Manager, the Crating & Packaging Associate / Shop Labourer is responsible for supporting daily shop floor operations related to packing, crating, paint preparation, receiving, and order fulfillment. This role rotates through several functional areas based on production needs and staffing levels.
Successful candidates must be reliable, safety-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while performing physically demanding tasks and handling products with care and attention to detail.
This is a hands-on role that plays a critical part in ensuring products are prepared, protected, tracked, and shipped accurately and on time.
Rotating Work Areas May Include
Employees in this role will rotate between the following areas:
1. Standard Packing Associate
Pick and pack stocked Hideaway products for same-day shipping
Accurately select items from inventory and prepare orders for shipment
Ensure correct hardware and components are included
2. Custom Packing Associate
Sort and organize custom fabricated parts
Carefully wrap, bag, and pack custom components to prevent damage
Pick and pack custom orders with higher attention to detail
3. Paint Preparation
Prepare and load parts to be sent out for powder coating
Sort, bundle, and stage materials according to paint schedules
Ensure parts are correctly identified and tracked before shipping to paint
4. Paint Receiving & Quality Check
Receive finished parts returning from powder coating
Perform quality checks on painted items
Verify part counts, finish quality, and completeness before orders proceed to packing
5. Pergola Associate / Assembly Support
Track parts through the production chain for pergola orders
Inventory components, confirm hardware, and review wiring requirements
Support light assembly and preparation prior to packing and crating
6. Crating & Packaging
Build custom wooden crates for large or fragile products
Secure products inside crates to meet shipping standards
Prepare final shipments for carrier pickup
Key Responsibilities
Build custom crates to protect products during shipping
Pack and prepare standard and custom orders with care and accuracy
Handle products throughout the packaging, staging, and shipping process
Load and unload materials and finished goods as required
Maintain organized, clean, and safe work areas
Read and follow work orders, packing lists, and shipping instructions
Track parts through paint and production processes when required
Follow all workplace health and safety policies (WHMIS, OH&S, WCB, and internal procedures)
Use power tools safely and effectively (drills, skill saws, levels, etc.)
Perform other shop-related duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
1–2 years of experience in a shop, warehouse, or manufacturing environment preferred
Comfortable using power tools such as skill saws, drills, and levels
Steel-toe safety boots required
Ability to lift up to approximately 50+ lbs on a repetitive basis
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Reliable with excellent attendance and punctuality
Positive attitude and willingness to learn multiple roles
Able to rotate between different tasks and work areas as needed
