Director, Compliance

Are you a strategic compliance leader who can turn complex regulatory requirements into practical, business-minded solutions that protect the organization and enable growth?

The Director, Compliance is responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing Thomson Reuters Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) program in Australia and providing general product compliance support for Asia-Pacific and emerging markets. This position will manage risk assessments, maintain policies, report suspicious activity to regulators, act as the primary liaison for AUSTRAC, and will provide critical product compliance support and advisory services for our operations and product launches in APAC.

This role will be based in Sydney and report to the Vice President of Compliance.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Director, Compliance , you will:

Program Development & Governance: Establish and maintain robust AML/CTF internal controls, policies, and procedures tailored to Thomson Reuter’s risk profile.

Risk Assessment: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments on products, customers, and geographic locations to identify potential vulnerabilities.

Oversight: Oversee and monitor customer due diligence, including enhanced due diligence (EDD) on high-risk customers, including Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs).

Monitoring & Reporting: Monitor transactions for suspicious activity, investigate irregularities, and file reports with regulatory authorities and escalate critical compliance risks and provide regulator programmatic updates.

Regulatory Liaison: Act as the primary contact for regulatory audits, inspections, and inquiries.

Training & Awareness: Implement firm-wide training programs to ensure staff understand their obligations.

Product Advisory & Go-To-Market Support: Partner with product development, legal, and commercial teams to ensure products and services launched in Asia and emerging markets comply with local regulatory requirements. Conduct compliance reviews and risk assessments for new market entries, product localization efforts, and cross-border data initiatives.

Team Collaboration: Partner closely with the larger Compliance team to implement and support enterprise-wide compliance initiatives.

General Compliance Advisory: Provide guidance to regional business units on broader corporate compliance topics.

Culture of Compliance: Champion a strong culture of ethics and compliance, assisting with internal investigations, compliance audits, and global policy rollouts as needed.

About You

You’re a fit for the role of Director, Compliance , if you have the following required qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required; Juris Doctor, LLM, or relevant advanced degree is preferred.

8+ years of progressive experience in compliance, legal, or risk management within the financial services, fintech, or data/technology sectors.

Have in-depth knowledge of Australian AML/CTF laws, AUSTRAC regulations, and industry best practices.

Proven experience navigating regulatory frameworks and providing product compliance support in APAC and emerging markets.

Demonstrated ability to build and manage comprehensive compliance programs independently and drive cross-functional alignment.

Have experience engaging with AUSTRAC and/or similar regulators.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into actionable business strategies.

Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external business customers.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

Professional certification (e.g., ACAMS, ICA) is highly desirable.
