Director of Engineering & Architecture (Strategy-led)
Location: Edinburgh (hybrid)
Salary: Upto £180,000 per annum + bonus + benefits
I’m supporting a complex, regulated organisation appointing a Director to lead Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, and Software Engineering across the business. The role sits beneath executive technology leadership and carries material influence over technology direction, engineering standards, and long-term architectural decisions.
This position exists to align business strategy with technology execution, shaping enterprise roadmaps and ensuring engineering delivery consistently realises value through a product-led operating model. You’ll be a trusted partner to senior leaders, with visibility across major investment, modernisation, and transformation activity.
Responsibilities
• Own and drive strategy, architecture, and engineering direction across multiple domains
• Lead and develop Strategy, Architecture, and Software Engineering teams
• Translate business priorities into clear technology and engineering roadmaps
• Set architectural standards and provide senior authority on technical decision-making
• Embed enterprise architecture into portfolio governance and investment planning
• Evolve engineering capability, operating models, and delivery standards
• Act as an escalation point for complex engineering and architecture challenges
• Partner with senior stakeholders to shape priorities and trade-offs
• Oversee budgets, resourcing, and tooling across architecture and engineering
• Contribute to large-scale transformation and modernisation initiatives
Experience / What you bring
• Director-level or equivalent experience across technology strategy, architecture, or engineering
• Background operating at enterprise scale within complex or regulated environments
• Strong grounding in modern software engineering and enterprise architecture
• Credibility influencing senior leaders without holding the top technology role
• Comfortable shaping direction rather than owning day-to-day delivery
• Clear, pragmatic decision-maker with strong commercial awareness
