On behalf of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), South Australia’s independent environment protection regulator, an exceptional opportunity is available for you to join as Director Science Services. This pivotal executive role places you at the heart of safeguarding South Australia’s unique natural environment, supporting sustainable development, and influencing policy at the highest levels. You will be instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of Water Science and Air, Noise & Radiation Science services, ensuring that scientific excellence underpins regulatory decisions that protect communities and ecosystems.
As Director Science Services, you will shape South Australia’s environmental future by leading teams in water quality, air quality, noise control, and radiation safety. You’ll provide expert advice, develop strategies for emerging risks, foster stakeholder partnerships, oversee projects, manage resources, and drive continuous improvement. Your role includes supporting staff wellbeing, ensuring compliance, promoting inclusivity, advocating evidence-based policies, and contributing to executive decisions. You’ll represent the EPA at forums, share knowledge across disciplines, and champion sustainable outcomes for communities statewide.
As a member of the Executive Team, you will be part of the EPA’s leadership group, modelling positive culture and continuous improvement across the organisation, and driving organisation strategy.
Key responsibilities:
Provide quality high-level advice and support to the Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive, Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, and the EPA Board on water, air, noise and radiation science.
Implement risk frameworks to identify, mitigate, and monitor environmental risks effectively.
Build relationships with stakeholders to achieve science based, balanced and sustainable regulatory outcomes.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance EPA’s reputation as a science-led, innovative regulator.
Establish networks with experts to share knowledge and strengthen environmental protection.
Manage resources across the Water Science and Air, Noise & Radiation Science areas efficiently and effectively.
Contribute expertise to executive decisions, strategic planning, policies, and stakeholder engagement.
Design programs that improve scientific understanding and underpin science based regulatory decision making.
Leading the development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) strategy and enhanced capability for the EPA.
Key requirements:
Extensive senior leadership experience in technical or scientific environments.
Proven ability to optimise team capability through supportive leadership practices.
Expertise in regulatory matters related to water science or air quality management.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills with a focus on collaboration and trust-building.
Strong understanding of government policies.
Relevant tertiary qualifications in science (environmental science preferred), engineering, or related fields.
