Job Description: Electrocardiogram (ECG) Technicians are specialized healthcare professionals who perform ECGs, stress tests, and Holter monitoring to measure a patient’s heart rate, rhythm, and other electrical activity of the heart. These diagnostic tests are crucial for detecting heart conditions, monitoring patient heart health, and aiding in the diagnosis and treatment planning by physicians. ECG Technicians must ensure accurate test administration and patient comfort during the procedure.
Key Responsibilities: Conducting ECG Tests Perform standard 12-lead ECGs, as well as other types, depending on patient needs and physician orders.
Patient Preparation Prepare patients for ECGs by explaining the procedure, positioning them correctly, and attaching electrodes to the appropriate body parts.
Operating ECG Equipment: Safely and effectively operate ECG machines, ensuring accurate and high-quality recordings.
Maintaining Equipment: Regularly check and maintain ECG equipment to ensure it is in good working condition, troubleshooting any issues as needed.
Recording and Analysis: Document the ECG findings and prepare reports for physicians, noting any abnormalities or issues detected during the test.
Holter Monitoring and Stress Tests: Apply Holter monitors and conduct stress tests, monitoring patients and equipment to ensure safety and quality of results.
Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Education Qualifications: Education: Completion of an ECG Technician program or a related healthcare field program from an accredited institution is required. Some positions may accept on-the-job training or related experience in lieu of formal education.
Certification: Certification from a recognized organization, such as the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) as a Certified EKG Technician (CET), may be required or preferred by employers.
Experience: Entry-level positions may not require experience, but prior experience in a clinical setting can be advantageous.
Key Attributes: Attention to Detail: Precision in attaching electrodes and operating the ECG machine to ensure accurate readings.
Patient-Care Skills: Ability to make patients feel comfortable and explain procedures in a reassuring manner.
