The Opportunity
The Head of Digital Portals is accountable for the strategic, technical, operational and commercial leadership of Vocus’ customer and product portals. The role ensures the current portal ecosystem operates reliably and continues to evolve, while defining and delivering a future-state portal strategy that supports Vocus’ business, customer experience and transformation objectives.
This role acts as the single point of accountability for portal platforms across their full lifecycle – from vision and roadmap through to delivery, support and ongoing optimisation – working closely with IT, Transformation and Business stakeholders.
This is a highly visible role with genuine scope to shape strategy, influence enterprise priorities and deliver long-term value.
What you'll do in the role
The key responsibilities of the role are listed below. These may change in response to your personal growth and business demands.
Strategic Leadership
Define and own a clear, enterprise-wide Digital Portal Strategy, addressing fragmentation, legacy platforms and inconsistent customer experiences.
Establish a compelling future-state vision for Vocus portals, including experience design, platform architecture, capability roadmap and operating model.
Lead extensive consultation across IT, Transformation, Product and Business teams to align priorities and drive enterprise-wide commitment.
Translate strategy into a prioritised, multi-year roadmap with measurable outcomes and investment rationale.
Naturally frames technology decisions through the lens of customer and user experience.
Technical Leadership
Provide senior technical oversight across the portal ecosystem, balancing modernisation with stability of existing platforms.
Partner with Architecture and Engineering teams to define standards, patterns and target architectures.
Ensure portals are secure, scalable, resilient and integrated effectively with core systems and APIs.
Delivery & Operational Leadership
Maintain and improve existing development and support cadences to ensure continuity and reliability of current portals.
Drive disciplined delivery, release management and service performance across multiple portal platforms.
Lead continuous improvement in quality, speed, reliability and user experience.
Commercial & Value Leadership
Own budget, investment prioritisation and vendor performance for portal platforms.
Evaluate initiatives based on customer value, business impact and return on investment.
Provide clear, data-driven recommendations to support executive decision-making.
People & Stakeholder Leadership
Build and lead high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams across product, delivery and technology.
Builds trust-based relationships with engineers, product teams, business leaders and partners.
Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, clearly articulating options, trade-offs and recommendations.
Influence across a complex stakeholder environment to drive alignment and momentum.
What you'll bring to the role
Senior leadership experience in digital platforms, portals or customer-facing enterprise systems.
Proven success modernising legacy digital environments and establishing strategic direction.
Deep experience leading large-scale customer or product portal ecosystems, with ability to assess fragmented or legacy digital environments and define pragmatic modernisation pathways.
Strong understanding of enterprise and solution architecture principles, including layered architectures, API-led integration, microservices and event-driven patterns.
Ability to work effectively with Enterprise and Solution Architects to define target-state architectures and transition plans.
Strong familiarity with modern web application stacks (e.g. React/Angular, Node/.NET/Java backends, CMS and headless architectures)
Experience with identity and access management, single sign-on, role-based access controls and customer authentication.
Understanding of content management, workflow, self-service and digital experience platforms.
Experience in designing and operating portals in cloud environments (AWS), and familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing.
Strong understanding of secure-by-design principles for customer-facing platforms.
Strong background across strategy, delivery and technology in complex organisations.
Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments and drive clarity.
Commercial acumen, including budget and vendor management
Excellent communication and stakeholder influence skills.
Experience in operating in scaled agile based framework, with knowledge of Jira, Confluence.
Strong grounding in product-led and agile delivery models, including backlog management, prioritisation and value-based decision making.
Experience operating multiple delivery cadences across legacy and modern platforms simultaneously.
Ability to balance short-term stability with long-term transformation objectives.
Experience working with Jira, Confluence, Gitlab and Microsoft office products.
Personal Attributes
Brings clarity and direction to complex, fragmented environments.
Able to step back from day-to-day delivery to define a compelling long-term vision, while still understanding the detail.
Thinks in systems and outcomes, not just solutions or platforms
Able to influence without authority across IT, Transformation and Business functions
Communicates complex technical topics in a way that resonates with senior executives and non-technical stakeholders.
Builds alignment by clearly articulating options, risks and trade-offs.
Willing to make tough calls on prioritisation, investment and platform direction.
Remains calm and effective in complex, high-pressure environments.
