Inland Rail Pty Ltd is delivering a 1,600km freight line that is transforming how goods are moved around Australia. When fully operational, Inland Rail will connect Melbourne to Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. As one of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia, Inland Rail is helping to address the nation’s future freight needs and meet the demands of our growing population.

About the opportunity
As Head of Legal – Commercial & Governance, you will work closely with the General Counsel and a highly collaborative in‑house legal team to support the delivery of the Inland Rail program. You will provide trusted legal and strategic advice across a broad range of matters, with a strong focus on:
Commercial and procurement agreements
Major infrastructure project delivery
Governance, compliance and risk management
Property, employment and investigation matters
Dispute management and early resolution strategies
You will partner closely with senior leaders across Inland Rail, ARTC, external counsel and key external stakeholders to support informed, commercially sound decision making.
Key responsibilities included but are not limited to:
Provide guidance on governance and compliance obligations across project agreements, policies and legislation
Identify and manage current and emerging legal risks and priorities across the program
Support assurance activities and compliance reporting to the Executive and Board
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen legal capability and service delivery
About you
You are a senior legal professional with strong commercial judgement and experience operating in complex, regulated environments. You should bring a pragmatic, solutions‑focused mindset and enjoy working closely with business leaders on high‑impact projects.
Additionally to be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
A current Australian practising certificate
Significant post‑admission experience in commercial, procurement, construction and/or property law
Experience providing legal advice on large‑scale infrastructure or capital projects
Strong capability in managing risk, governance and compliance obligations
Proven ability to work collaboratively with executives, internal stakeholders and external advisers
Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills
