COMPENSATION: $65,559-$113,636 Annually; depending upon experience
The Specialty Math Teacher guides students in grades 6 through 8 through a rich and developmentally attuned journey in mathematics, cultivating clarity of thinking, perseverance, and confidence. Through thoughtfully prepared and engaging lessons, the teacher carries a coherent scope and sequence that supports each student’s growing capacity for abstract reasoning while remaining responsive to individual learning needs in collaboration with the learning support team. Clear communication with families, careful stewardship of student progress, and regular reporting are integral to the role. As an active member of the faculty, the teacher participates fully in the life of the school, attending meetings and events, contributing to governance, supervising students during the rhythms of the day, and fostering warm, professional relationships with students, parents, and colleagues in alignment with school policies and shared values.
• Plan and deliver effective and engaging math lessons for grades 6, 7, and 8
• Maintain a scope and sequence that ensures a coherent and thoughtful progression through middle school math topics
• Adapt and differentiate teaching styles to student needs and interests, in collaboration with our learning support team
• Write weekly emails updating parents on class activities
• Maintain student records with regard to attendance and achievement
• Prepare student progress/grade reports for parents in accordance with school policies
• Supervision for recess and lunch duties
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree and prior teaching experience
• Previous Waldorf training and/or a willingness to take Waldorf courses within the first few years of employment (professional development funding is available to substantially offset associated costs)
• Strong classroom management skills
• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for significant periods of time, and use staircases often
• Musical and artistic ability preferred, but not required

What We Look For In a Orton Gillingham Tutor
• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham approach including multisensory structured literacy, phonogram instruction, syllable types, morphology, encoding and decoding rules, and the scope and sequence for teaching reading to students with dyslexia. Ability to explain the six syllable types, spelling generalizations, and the visual-auditory-kinesthetic-tactile methodology while preparing struggling readers for reading proficiency.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at delivering systematic, explicit, multisensory phonics instruction following Orton-Gillingham methodology. Guides students through phonogram drills, red word memorization, syllable division practice, encoding exercises, and connected text reading using the diagnostic-prescriptive approach. Emphasizes individualized lesson pacing based on student mastery and connects structured literacy to building reading confidence and academic success for dyslexic learners.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence and common challenges such as vowel team confusion, syllable division errors, and transferring decoding skills to fluent reading. Adapts instruction using multisensory techniques including sand trays, tapping, and color-coded syllable cards to support students with dyslexia, reading disabilities, or foundational literacy gaps from elementary through adult levels.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
