Summary
The Junior Controller supports the VP Finance in managing the organization’s accounting operations and financial reporting. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting activities, ensuring accurate financial records, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, and maintaining strong internal controls.
In the absence of a Controller, the Junior Controller acts as the lead for accounting operations and supervises accounting staff while working closely with the VP Finance on financial reporting, year-end review, and budgeting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting
Assist the VP finance with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Assist the VP Finance with analyzing financial results and explain budget vs. actual variances
Prepare any financial reports for the VP Finance and senior leadership
Accounting Operations
Oversee general ledger accounting
Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations
Ensure accuracy of financial records and accounting transactions
Supervise accounting staff (AP, AR, payroll, or accounting clerks) and fill the roll when necessary
GST, government filing and payments, deposits at the bank, bank reconciliations
Rent reconciliations to tenants
Recording transactions for Group of Companies
Internal Controls & Compliance
Maintain and improve internal control procedures
Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies
Assist with external year-end review
Assist with inventory counts
Assist with yearend schedules and documentation
Assist store managers and procurement department with transactions
Budgeting & Financial Planning
Assist the VP Finance with annual budgeting and forecasting
Support departmental budget monitoring
Assist with and prepare financial analysis to support decision-making
Process Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve accounting efficiency
Assist in implementation or optimization of accounting systems
Support automation and improvement of financial processes
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Certifications
CPA designation preferred
Experience
2–4 years of progressive accounting experience
Experience with month-end close and financial reporting
Experience supervising accounting processes or staff is an asset
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting
Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills
Experience with ERP or accounting systems
High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities
Strong communication and leadership skills
Pay: $75,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
