• Responsibilities:
• Creating designs: The primary responsibility of a junior fashion designer is to create new designs for garments, accessories, and other fashion items. They work closely with the senior designer to understand the brand's aesthetic and develop designs that adhere to this vision while also incorporating their own creativity.
• Trend Research: As a fashion designer, they must keep up with the latest trends and what is currently in demand in fashion. Junior fashion designers also need to create mood boards and research how to stay ahead of the trends.
• Sketching: A junior fashion designer must be able to translate their ideas into sketches. A typical day might involve sketching new designs, detailing the aesthetics, and incorporating specific measurements.
• Color and fabric selection: Junior fashion designers must be familiar with a variety of fabrics options in order to choose the right one for each design. They have to think about the drape, hand, and texture of the fabrics, as well as the suitability of the fabric for the design and the target market. Additionally, they have to consider the colors that are suitable for the design.
• Create Flat Drawings & Tech Packs: Tech packs are essential documents that are used in the process of manufacturing the clothing designs. Junior fashion designers must be able to create flat drawings and detailed tech packs that cover all aspects of the design, including measurements, fabric choices, and construction techniques.
• Assist in the fitting process: Junior fashion designers work closely with pattern makers and sample makers to ensure that the design of the garment meets the requirements of the design specifications. They also assist during fittings, giving feedback on how the garment fits and how to modify it for improvement.
• Communication: Junior fashion designers often interact with different teams in the fashion industry. They collaborate with manufacturers, fabric vendors, and ensure timely delivery of samples. Communication is an essential aspect of the job, and they are required to update stakeholders on the design process regularly.
• Keeping the equipment clean: The junior designer is also expected to ensure that the equipment and the work area stay clean. This may include the work table, the sewing machine, and the cutting tools. They have to ensure that all the equipment is in excellent condition and that safety precautions are taken.
