Dunedin Public Art Gallery is one of New Zealand's four major metropolitan art galleries. Established in 1884, the Gallery was New Zealand's first Art Gallery and is renowned today for the richness of its historic collection and its close working relationship with major New Zealand artists.
The Gallery houses a significant collection of New Zealand artworks covering the period from 1860 to the present. The collection also contains major holdings of historical European art, Japanese prints and the decorative arts. Historical works by renowned artists such as Turner, Gainsborough, Claude, and Machiavelli feature alongside the only Monet in a New Zealand collection and master works by Derain, Tissot, Burne-Jones and internationally acclaimed Dunedin artist Frances Hodgkins.
The opportunity:
This is an exciting period of transformation and growth for Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Toitū Otago Settlers Museum and Lan Yuan and we are seeking an experienced and dynamic Kaiako Toi who will work across our arts and cultural institutions as part of the Audience Development Team.
In this full-time role, you'll be responsible for working within the kaupapa of DPAG (and at times Lan Yuan and Toitū), telling the stories of Ōtepoti Dunedin and its surrounds through hands on art experiences.
Working in a creative and engaging environment, this is a unique and exciting chance for you to plan collaboratively with visiting Kaiako and kura to develop and deliver bespoke art education-based experiences for ākonga. You'll have proven teaching skills, and in this role have an opportunity to be creative, bring your can-do attitude, be flexible, a team player and a problem solver. In return you'll get to teach in a fully equipped art classroom and gallery setting and in the tranquil Chinese scholar's garden of Lan Yuan.
The teams across the Dunedin City Council Museums and Galleries are on a navigational journey to integrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi into our institutional practices and values. We work reciprocally and collegially to acknowledge the mana of our team and partners, and to support all the stages of this journey.
About you:
If you have a positive outlook, sound experience in the field of teaching, a strong willingness to take on the diverse tasks required of a Kaiako Toi in a public gallery environment, and the ability to create enriching interactive arts and cultural experiences to inspire our tamariki 0 - 18 years of age - then we would love to hear from you!
