OVERVIEW
The Laboratory Analyst, Summer Student is a member of the Toronto Redpath Quality Group and reports directly to the Lab Supervisor. The role is primarily responsible for performing laboratory and sugar loss analyses and reports, and quality and food safety functions as assigned by the Lab Supervisor and/or the Quality Assurance Manager.
DETAILED ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Wide array of testing for granulated sugar, liquid sugars, icing sugars and soft sugars as needed
Testing of in-process samples and other samples as assigned
Sugar Loss samples collection and analyses as needed
Laboratory equipment verification and troubleshooting
Documentation and analysis of results
Assists in preparation of necessary reports and trending information
Participates in all quality, safety, and environmental training
Practices and promotes GMPs and plant safety goals
Interacts with Process and Packaging Supervision on issues related to sampling and documentation
Ensures optimal performance of various testing equipment and accuracy of generated results
Other quality and food safety tasks as assigned
WORK EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Enrolled in college or university program with chemistry or food science (or equivalent) related discipline preferred
Capable of demonstrating good laboratory skills and techniques
Proficient computer skills in standard Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Access, Visio)
Knowledge of Quality Assurance/Control practices and procedures preferred
ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES):
Able to follow instructions
Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written in English
Must be capable of troubleshooting and resolving issues in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Provides feedback on trends to quality management
Works closely with other laboratory staff to maintain efficient testing, and clean working environment
