In this critical leadership role, you are overseeing complex disability case management across a portfolio of clients. Working closely with employees, union representatives, healthcare professionals, and internal departments, you also supporting employees through occupational and non-occupational claims and facilitates timely and sustainable return-to-work (RTW) plans.


The Role
Reporting to the Manager, Abilities Management, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

Assessing employees’ fitness for work based on bona fide medical and functional information;
Identifying opportunities and barriers for early return to work; and influencing case activity to achieve desired case outcomes and mitigate disability costs;
Serving as a subject matter expert and internal advisor on health, disability, and accommodation matters;
Leveraging Cority as the organization's primary case management system, playing a key role in optimizing workflows, ensuring data integrity, and informing program decisions through reporting and analytics;
Overseeing complex case files and ensuring Coordinators and Advisors are applying best practices in case triage, documentation, follow-up and return to work planning;
Providing end-to-end case management for escalated or sensitive files, collaborating closely with other departments including People Experience, Payroll, Scheduling and Operations;
Interpreting and applying collective agreement provisions related to STIIP and RTW processes working within the WCB Act and Regulation, Human Rights Legislation and Long Term Disability Benefit Plans;
Supporting and educating Managers, and employees off work on related processes, collective agreements and applicable legislation;
Coordinating case management activities of all occupational and non occupational injuries and illnesses, to support safe, timely and sustainable returns to work;
Providing consistent support to employees by communicating regularly, collaborating with care providers, setting disability-compatible goals, tracking progress, and coordinating with managers and union representatives;
Assisting injured/ill employees in all aspects of their absence including early contact, adjudication of claims, case triage, initiation of a case management plan, development and implementation of recovery plans including RTW programs where necessary;
Developing, in collaboration with the employee and their care providers, individualized plans that facilitate an early and safe return to work that meet’s the employee’s functional ability and individual needs;
Providing technical guidance and expertise to support disability benefit eligibility, adjudication, ongoing management, and evaluation of complex STIIP, LTD, and WCB claims;
Providing advice and recommendations to employees and managers on the suitability of job duties related to employees current functional status;
Interpreting policy and internal and external records to ensure accommodation design is based on medical information and/or functional restrictions/limitations;
Maintaining general awareness of applicable legislation including Employment Standards Act (ESA), Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act (FOIPPA), and ensures compliance within area of responsibility;
Interacting on a regular basis with third party providers (i.e. Canada Life, Sun Life, WorkSafe BC) that provide assistance and support with the disability administration requirements.

What you bring to the team

A Bachelor’s Degree in health related discipline such as disability management, health sciences, kinesiology, nursing, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Master’s Degree in disability management considered an asset
4-6 years of experience in disability management activities and return-to-work planning. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Solid knowledge and experience in the areas of human resources, disability management, case management, occupational health and safety, and rehabilitation
Strong understanding of labour relations issues relevant to health and wellness, workplace safety and disability management including extensive knowledge of employee benefits and compensation

Additional information
The target salary range is $105,200 - $131,500 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience, and internal equity.
