Our client, a growing innovator in its field, is seeking an accomplished Lead Intellectual Property Counsel to manage and advance its global IP portfolio. This role requires a strategic legal professional with extensive experience in patent prosecution, IP litigation, and IP strategy development. You will be responsible for safeguarding the company's innovations, identifying new IP opportunities, and providing critical legal advice to internal stakeholders, including R&D and business development teams.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement comprehensive IP strategies to protect the company's innovations and competitive advantage. Manage the global patent portfolio, including drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in various jurisdictions. Conduct patentability searches, freedom-to-operate analyses, and due diligence reviews for new products and technologies. Oversee and manage IP litigation matters, working with external counsel as necessary. Advise on IP-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements. Review and advise on intellectual property clauses in contracts and other legal documents. Conduct IP training sessions for employees to foster a culture of innovation and IP awareness. Monitor competitor IP activities and advise on potential infringement risks. Manage trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets portfolio. Liaise with inventors, scientists, and engineers to identify and document new inventions. Stay current with changes in IP law and regulations worldwide. Supervise and mentor junior IP attorneys and paralegals. Collaborate with business units to align IP strategy with commercial objectives.
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. Admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction and eligibility for in-house counsel registration. Admission to practice before the USPTO as a Patent Attorney or Patent Agent. Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in intellectual property law, with a significant portion in a corporate in-house or top-tier law firm setting. Proven experience in patent prosecution, strategic IP counseling, and IP due diligence. Experience managing IP litigation is a strong advantage. Deep understanding of patent law across various technical fields relevant to our client's business. Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills. Strong strategic thinking and business acumen. Ability to manage complex legal matters independently and work effectively in a team environment. Experience with managing outside counsel and budgets. High ethical standards and professional integrity.
