At NPL, our apprentices are making their mark and getting involved in real projects, whilst developing invaluable skills and experience.

As an apprentice, you’ll get involved in the NPL Library and Scientific Museum. You’ll be learning from colleagues who will blend practical experience with invaluable guidance and theory.

Library Assistant Apprentice will work to support an efficient and effective library and information service to the business, providing access and information from our scientific museum and historical collections. The apprentice will be involved with supporting our librarian in managing our book collections, our publications repository, as well as sourcing documents or books to support the scientific work across the organisation. They will help maintain the business’s service level agreement, assuring accurate information provision in a timely manner.

During the apprenticeship, you will study the Level 3 Library, information and archive services assistant apprenticeship over 18 months.

A wide mix of training is provided for the duration of the apprenticeship, combining the daily tasks, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. Further off-the-job training will then be built into your workplace activities. This could include online learning, or tasks set by apprenticeship tutors for completion in the workplace. Our aim is to help you be confident in the workplace from day one; through additional training you will learn how to communicate effectively, how to manage your time, and how to work as part of a team. We want you to develop your self-awareness and your confidence.

Your day-to-day tasks as a Library Assistant Apprentice will include:

Attending training sessions with apprenticeship training provider to expand your skillset.
Gaining practical experience to achieve a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification in Library, Information and Archive Services
Supporting NPL staff to access documents and books that meets their information needs and requirements in a cost efficient and timely manner.
Supporting the curation of the NPL publications repository, helping to assure administration of open access policies and registration of DOIs.
Supporting the management of NPL’s book collection, processing loans, purchasing new stock.
Supplying materials and information from NPL’s historical collection to users when requested.

You will be able to demonstrate the following skills, behaviours, and qualifications:

Minimum of 5 GCSEs, grades 4 / C or above (or predicted). These need to include Maths and English subjects.[TL1]
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
A professional approach to work, and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Good team working skills, demonstrating cooperation and flexibility.
Resilience and determination to keep going at times when the work is challenging
Live within a commutable distance to Teddington or willing to relocate (the role is based on site 5 days a week)
