Job Summary:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Borrower Services and Library Operations, the Library Assistant is the primary point of contact for library users for general inquiries, reference assistance, library material distribution, and audio-visual equipment use. The incumbent provides responsive and knowledgeable customer service to assist users in using the Library and finding relevant library materials, and supports users through demonstrations, orientations, and troubleshooting. The Library Assistant provides training and acts as operational liaison to tutors and subject coordinators in the Writing and Tutoring Centre of the Learning Commons. In support of collection access and management including the Reserve collection, the incumbent performs bibliographic searching, manages print and digital materials, and conducts inventory.

Job Description:
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Provides superior customer service and assistance to students, staff and external parties primarily in Borrower Services and other related library services:
Responds to inquiries about library services through in person and electronic communication regarding routine Library procedures and functions, and processing booking requests for media items. Refers non-routine or complex questions to the supervisor or external departments based on established guidelines.
Performs routine circulation desk duties using the Integrated Library System, including the distribution of library materials to users, maintaining the accuracy and privacy of library user records, and contacting users about outstanding issues such as late returns.
Answers reference questions by determining user needs and assists in locating relevant resources for assignments. Refers complex questions to Reference Assistants and Librarians.
Conducts user orientations and workshops related to the Library and Learning Commons.
Performs cashiering duties (e.g. late fees, fines, etc).
2. Provides basic training and troubleshoots user problems with technology within Library and Learning Commons:
Provides basic training, problem solves, troubleshoots basic technical issues and refers non-routine questions to IT staff.
Instructs and demonstrates to users on searching the Library website and using library equipment.
Troubleshoots technical problems with multimedia and copying equipment such as screen-sharing multimedia units in the mini-theatres.
3. Works collaboratively with key stakeholders to enable student access to services and resources available in the Library and Learning Commons.
Acts as an operational liaison to tutors and subject coordinators for Writing & Tutoring Centre.
Writes, edits and maintains currency of content on the Library and Learning Commons website, including the online tutoring platform for the Writing and Tutoring Centre.
Performs bibliographic searching, material processing and inventory to support library collections. Maintains statistics for various functional areas of the Library and Learning Commons.
Collaborates with the Bookstore and instructors to maintain the Reserve Collections, including the identification and management of print and online items.
4. Liaises with the College’s Facilities Department and Campus Security to support a safe learning environment for users.
(If acts in the capacity of a floor warden as part of Emergency Preparedness Plan, may take training in fire, WHIMIS, and/or earthquake preparedness.)
5. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience:
Completion of 2-year Library Technician diploma program.
One (1) year of related library experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Sound knowledge of standard library organization, policies, regulations and procedures.
Experience in providing responsive customer service interactions, preferably in an educational setting.
Experience using an integrated library system, preferably Sierra or similar.
Experience performing bibliographic searching.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge in the use of computer applications, including web publishing, word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic communication.
Experience with public speaking and conducting orientations, an asset.
Skills & Abilities:
Excellent English oral and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas clearly in writing or in person.
Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to handle potentially difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and co-workers, and to deal patiently, tactfully and effectively with students and other library users.
Excellent internet research and database search skills.
Ability to conduct reference interviews and refer questions to a librarian or reference assistant as appropriate.
Ability to work in a dynamic and challenging environment, solve problems as they occur, and make thoughtful and timely decisions.
Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to provide basic technical training and orientations to students, faculty, and other non-technical users.
Ability to understand, interpret and apply department and college rules, policies, and technical materials.
Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details and enter information accurately.
Strong clerical aptitude, including good keyboarding skills with a minimum of 40 wpm.
Ability to lift and shelve books, move book trucks, and stand at the circulation counter for several hours at a time.
