Job Description

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of maintenance, repair and construction work in the care of public grounds, buildings, streets, sidewalks, right-of-way, and easements; operates and maintains a variety of maintenance and construction tools and equipment; and performs related work as required.

Candidates selected to interview for the position may be required to participate in a practical exam as part of the hiring process.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work in the care of public grounds,buildings, streets sidewalks, right-of-way,and easements.
Cleans parking lots and sidewalks using blowers and hand tools.
Maintains planters and landscaped areas by weeding and replacing plants.
Collects and disposes of trash from bus stops, city malls, and city-owned parking lots.
Maintains lighting in city facilities and parking lots; perform electrical and plumbing repairs.
Replaces broken sprinklers and irrigation lines; Completes irrigation repairs as needed.
Maintains storm drainage systems such as channels, catch basins, culverts, and ditches.
Maintains street and traffic signs, curb markings, and residential address markings.
Sets up traffic safety controls for work zones and special events.
Participates in emergency response activities including storm preparation, cleanup, and after-hours callouts.
Participates in the cleanup of homeless encampments.
Oversees the safe disposal of needles, sharp objects, bloodborne pathogens, and other hazardous materials.
Operates and maintains a variety of power tools, automotive, and construction equipment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:


Operations, services, and activities of a maintenance program.
General methods, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, buildings, grounds, and drainage systems. Basic principles and maintenance practices of irrigation systems.
Operational characteristics, safe use, and routine of hand tools, power tools, and equipment
Work zone traffic control procedures.
Occupational hazards, safety practices, and procedures related to maintenance work.

Ability to:
Perform a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair work in assigned areas.
Operate and maintain maintenance equipment tools, and machinery safely and effectively.
Carry out physical tasks and heavy manual labor for extended periods and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Maintain safety in high-traffic areas and around work zones. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, work rules, and procedures
Work independently and with sound judgement and minimal supervision.
Work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
Respond to public requests and inquiries
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of performing job duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Combination of training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school and two years' experience in building, street, sidewalk, and facility maintenance. Completion of recognized training courses in carpentry, electrical or plumbing may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

Other Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license from the State of California.

Physical Demands:
Sit, stand, twist, walk, kneel, crouch, climb, stoop, lift, carry, push, pull, and bend for extended periods of time.
Ability to see and hear.
Lift, carry, push, or pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 to 90 pounds.
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to noise, vibrations, dust, chemicals, fumes, and occasionally hazardous environments.
Walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Safely and legally operate a motor vehicle under various conditions; bend, reach, and enter and exit the vehicle as required.
Perform tasks that may involve confined-space entry or working at heights exceeding 10 feet.

Employee Benefits

Vacation Leave: To accrue at a total of 80 hours per year of employment for a maximum of 320 hours.

Holidays: 13 paid holidays, including New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (2days), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and 2 Floating Holidays.

Sick Leave: To accrue at a rate of eight (8) hours per month for a maximum accrual of 96 hours per year. Sick leave shall accrue without limitation.

Medical Insurance: Medical Insurance Coverage provided by the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). 100% paid for employee and 50% toward dependent coverage. Lifetime benefit of 50% for retiree and 25% toward dependent coverage is available to fully vested CalPERS members who retire with 5 consecutive years of full-time service with the City upon retirement.

Dental Insurance: Provided by Delta Dental (DeltaCare USA and Delta Dental PPO). The City covers 100% of employee premiums and 75% of dependent coverage. Lifetime benefits are available for fully vested employees after 5 years of full-time employment with the City.

Vision Insurance: Provided by VSP. 100% paid for employees. Lifetime benefit for fully vested employees which is 5 consecutive years of full-time employment with the City upon retirement.

Employee Opt Out: The City will provide employee with an "opt-out" stipend of $500.00 per month in lieu of medical insurance coverage.

Employee Optional (Supplemental) Benefits Plan: The City provides $1,744.00 per fiscal year for each full-time employee to use for the sole purpose of payment of employee out-of-pocket health insurance premiums

Deferred Compensation: The City matches employee contributions to the 457 plan, up to 1.5% of the employee’s base salary.

Life Insurance: $50,000 per full-time employee.

Disability: Provided for non-occupational accidents or illness. Premiums are paid by the City for full-time employees.

Retirement: The City participates in the CalPERS retirement system. Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees hired after January 1, 2012 are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.

Social Security: The City does not participate in Social Security. The City and employee both contribute 1.45% for Medicare.
