Job description, work day and responsibilities
The Plant Mechanic Helper will assist a Plant Mechanic with maintaining the City's Sewage Lift Stations. This includes following all City and State mandated guidelines for Lift Stations, scheduled checks on stations, and operate and perform weekly maintenance on large generators/by-pass pumps. Other duties include rebuilding pumps, wiring, programming alarms, trouble shooting and replacing electrical equipment, painting, and cleaning. The Plant Mechanic Helper must have strong oral and written communication skills, and computer knowledge. During emergency situations there may be a need to move/setup by-pass pumps and large generators. The Plant Mechanic Helper must be trained in lockout/tag out, confined space entry, and electrical safety and must also be familiar with all personal protective equipment required for this position. Ability to do heavy lifting (75 lbs.), climbing, bending and stooping is required. Must serve on a regular on-call rotation and be available for after-hours emergency situations, in potentially inclement weather conditions such as ice storms, thunder storms etc. The Plant Mechanic Helper will be required to fill in as Plant Mechanic in his absence. This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma/GEDÂ
• "OR" an equivalency of 2 years education + 7 years of "related" work experience (e.g., maintenance of water/waste water plants, and/or equipment)
• Valid Driver's License
• 1-3 years' experience of maintenance plants (e.g., water or waste water plants, lift stations, etc.) and/or equipment(e.g., pumps, manufacturing equipment, etc.)
• Grade 1Â NC WPC Collection System Certification ( "or" within 1 year of hire to remain in position)
• Previous experience using computers
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience/Knowledge of Collection Water Systems
• Water Pollution Control Collection System Operator and/or Maintenance Technologist Certification
• Extensive electrical experience
• Experience reading & interpreting electrical schematics
Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 6:15am - 4:45pm
