Opportunities across Health New Zealand
Medical Oncologists work in regional cancer centres throughout Aotearoa (New Zealand), many with strong links to tertiary hospitals and academic partners. Depending on your location, your role may include:
Assessment and management of solid tumour malignancies
Outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations
Supervision of chemotherapy and systemic therapies
Participation in multidisciplinary tumour boards
Teaching, research and service improvement initiatives
Common tumour streams in New Zealand include breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, upper GI, gynaecological and haematological malignancies. Opportunities exist to develop a subspecialty interest or support service innovation in areas such as clinical trials, rural outreach and survivorship care.
What it's like to work here
Medical Oncologists work closely with Radiation Oncologists, Haematologists, Palliative Care and surgical teams to deliver integrated cancer care. You'll contribute to national guidelines and regional pathways designed to support equitable access and timely treatment.

Salary & benefits
Base salary: NZD $170,000 – $250,000+ (based on the ASMS MECA)
Additional compensation: Penal rates, on-call and availability allowances where applicable
You'll also receive:
Annual CME allowance (up to NZD $16,000)
CME leave (up to 10 days per year)
Six weeks of annual leave per year
Twelve public holidays (plus time in lieu if rostered on)
Paid parental leave and long service entitlements
Reimbursement of MCNZ registration and APC
Professional indemnity cover paid by your employer
What you need to work here
To practise as a Medical Oncologist in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
Most international applicants need a postgraduate qualification comparable to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Medical Oncology or another recognised medical oncology qualification.
