Job Description

YW Calgary is seeking a dedicated Transitional Housing Program Counsellor to join our team. In this role, you will report directly to the Program Supervisor and provide gender-responsive clinical services to women in our transitional housing program. Your responsibilities include offering crisis intervention, as well as individualized and group therapy based on strength-based and solution-focused approaches. You will also design and facilitate treatment and prevention groups, using evidence-based methods and best practices. Adhering to the YW Practice Framework, which prioritizes trauma-sensitive care, feminist principles, and accessibility, you will focus on addressing addiction and mental health issues. Your ultimate goal will be to empower and support women as they navigate their path to stability and self-sufficiency. This role is a one (1) year term contract working 30 hours per week (0.8FTE) Tuesday-Thursday. This role is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement and will be located at our Inglewood location.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
• Complete counselling intake, needs, and risk assessments
• Provide therapeutic supports and interventions in the areas of Domestic Violence, trauma, mental health, and substance use issues
• Facilitate both preventative and treatment group programs that are aligned with the YW Practice Framework
• Develop and evaluate treatment plans and therapeutic progress
• Case consultation of complex cases with team and external service providers as needed
• Provide one- on-one counselling sessions to address mental health and addictions challenges
• Facilitate group therapy sessions to promote peer support and shared learning
• Adhere to sound record keeping and documentation practices, including safe storage of confidential information, timely data entry, and objective case noting
• Conduct pre (where required) and post questionnaires, evaluations, and scales in an ethical, culturally competent manner
• Use standardized format to document case notes: client participation, goals, and progress
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and HMIS for record keeping purposes
• Maintain records in accordance with program policies, organizational standards, and the mission and philosophy of YW Calgary
• Be proactive in one’s professional development and accountability for one’s own practice
• Adhere to the mandatory training requirements set forth by YW and specific training requirements for case management standards
• Keep up to date with promising practices related to issues that impact clients such as homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, and mental health
• Attend and engage in staff meetings, supervision, retreats, professional development opportunities and other meetings as required by the program
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other YW staff, volunteers and students
• Actively participate in strategic program planning and quality improvement planning and implementation
• Work collaboratively with service providers in Calgary in order to make linkages that support client goals
• Participate on community committees as deemed appropriate by the program manager; Be aware of new and existing resources in the community

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
• A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment
• A Master's degree in Social Work, Addictions Counselling, or related field, with registration with an appropriate regulating body required
• Knowledge of addiction, abuse, violence, and trauma impacts across the lifespan; including crisis intervention and intersecction with mental health
• Experience with treatment options such as EMDR, DBT, mind/body therapies, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, strength-based approach, and process therapy preferred
• Ability to communicate, engage, and build therapeutic relationships with complex clients; commitment to empowering women using a strengths-based approach preferred
• ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and CPR/First Aid Certification required
• Understanding and commitment to gender-responsive programming
• Knowledge of issues specific to women experiencing homelessness, including poverty, trauma, domestic violence, addictions, and mental health
• Competency in working with diverse populations (cultural diversity, marginalized groups, various ages and abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, LGBTQ2S+ community, trauma)
• Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary organization
