The Evergreen School, an independent school serving highly capable students in preschool through 8th grade, is currently accepting applications for a Middle School Science Teacher- 8th Grade (One Year Position for 2026-2027 school year).

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Evergreen School is seeking an experienced and collaborative Upper Division Science Teacher to teach Grade 8 Science, with a focus on Physical Sciences and Engineering. The Evergreen School’s middle school science program is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), emphasizing scientific practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts.

The 8th grade science curriculum builds on students’ curiosity and problem-solving skills through hands-on investigations, engineering design challenges, and project-based learning experiences. Collaboration across disciplines—particularly with Math, Technology, and BigLab—is strongly encouraged.

The ideal candidate is a reflective and student-centered educator who can design engaging, rigorous learning experiences for highly capable students with diverse learning styles and needs. This educator will value inquiry, collaboration, equity, and experiential learning, and will contribute positively to the culture of the Upper Division and the broader school community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teaching and Curriculum
• Teach Grade 8 Science with a focus on Physical Sciences and Engineering, using hands-on, lab-based, and project-based learning approaches.
• Design and implement inquiry-driven and engineering-focused units aligned with Evergreen’s science curriculum and NGSS.
• Incorporate design thinking, maker education, and real-world problem-solving into the instructional program.
• Plan, develop, and implement courses of instruction to meet student learning objectives, including creating lesson plans, assessments, and long-term curriculum maps.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with a range of learning profiles and abilities.
• Collaborate with science faculty and interdisciplinary colleagues to maintain a coherent, vertically aligned science program across grades.
• Student Support and Assessment
• Regularly assess student learning using formative and summative assessments with an equity-centered lens.
• Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students to support growth and mastery.
• Write individualized narrative student evaluation reports twice annually (January and June).
• Communicate regularly with advisors, learning support specialists, counselors, division leadership, and families regarding student progress.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress in compliance with school policies and accreditation requirements.
• Community Engagement and School Responsibilities
• Serve as an advisor or teach an additional elective course, depending on program needs and candidate qualifications.
• Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment with strong classroom management practices.
• Attend and actively participate in school, department, team, and parent meetings.
• Participate in school life beyond the classroom, including clubs, field trips, overnight programs, admission events, and other community activities.
• Manage science equipment, supplies, and instructional materials responsibly.
• Maintain vigilance regarding student health and safety at all times.
• Stay current with instructional technology and emerging best practices in science education.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree and WA teaching certificate preferred.
• Experience teaching middle school or upper elementary science, preferably Physical Sciences or Engineering.
• Demonstrated experience with project-based learning, inquiry-based instruction, and/or experiential education.
• Familiarity with or experience implementing Next Generation Science Standards preferred .
• Experience working in independent schools or similar student-centered environments preferred.

Working Conditions:
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds in connection with job duties such as assisting with classroom setup or moving materials.
• Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and school hallways for extended periods.
• Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and ****** students as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
• Evening and weekend work may be required at times

Position Details:

This is an exempt, 1.0 FTE full-time, benefits-eligible position for the 2026-2027 school year only. This one year position follows a 10-month work schedule while paid over 12 months. The salary range for an Evergreen School teacher is $71,500 to $123,920 per year, depending on degree(s) and years of experience.
