About the Role:

Summer at Lakeside is currently recruiting for a Molecular Biology Teacher to teach our Lakeside Summer Institute: Molecular Biology course (Gr.10-12). In this course, students will immerse themselves in the daily work of a molecular biologist, engaging in research projects such as exploring the metagenomics of soil organisms or using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and molecular cloning to study a host pathogen interaction. The specific projects students work on will be determined by the teacher, based on the teacher’s areas of interest and expertise. Through these projects, students will learn key concepts of cell biology and genetics, while also gaining a foundation in soft skills needed for scientific research such as building protocols and writing academic papers. This is a credit/no credit course earning one semester of credit. One year of high-school Biology is a prerequisite for this course.

Class runs June 22 - July 10, Monday - Friday, * a.m. – 1:30 p.m., with a 30 minute lunch break. There will also be a mandatory employee orientation on Thursday, June 18.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Create inclusive and culturally responsive curriculum for this course
• Design labs and research experiences appropriate for a group of high-school students that have different educational backgrounds and experiences; mentor students through those activities
• Coordinate with our Summer Lab Tech to order and organize supplies for this course
• Create organized and engaging lesson plans for each day
• Provide individual support and adapt different teaching strategies for students needing additional instruction
• Collaborate with the Summer Academic Dean to plan safe and engaging field trips that enhance student learning
• Provide written final comments for each student

Requirements and Qualifications:
• Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
• Prior experience teaching a diverse middle-school, high-school, or college-level student population; demonstrated equity and inclusion mindset. Candidates should be aware of their own identity and biases; candidate actively works to create an inclusive classroom environment.
• A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, master’s degree in relevant field preferred
• Industry or educational experience in the field of molecular biology.
• Experience with inclusive and multicultural curriculum development.
• Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
• CPR & First Aid certified by June 22, 2025
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Positive and collaborative attitude

Compensation and Benefits

The stipend for this position is $4,100. Lunch is included. The course may only run if enough students register. Enrollment will remain open until June 1. If the number of students enrolled is too small to run by June 1, or if the course is canceled for any reason, the stipend will not be paid. Summer at Lakeside also offers free Investigative Learning Camp enrollment for children (entering Gr.3-8) of summer employees during the weeks they are working. The Investigative Learning Camp runs July 6-July 31.
