Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a Locum consultant post in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine at Southampton Children’s Hospital commencing March 2026. It is essential for the post-holder to have experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care, renal replacement therapies and techniques of advanced ventilatory support, including the use of inhaled nitric oxide, high frequency oscillation and extracorporeal life support. It is also necessary for the post holder to have significant experience in management of severe traumatic head injuries and management of complex patients with multiple organ failure and critical care transport medicine

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Southampton PICU is a 16 bedded intensive care unit delivering a comprehensive service for all sub-specialties for the geographical area covering the Wessex Region, with a total population of about 3.5 million. In addition, a General Paediatric Service is provided for Southampton Health District with a population of 700,000 and congenital cardiac surgical services are delivered to a further 2 million people in the Thames Valley area. The regional PIC retrieval service is delivered from UHS in collaboration with Oxford University Hospital. In 2026/23 there were +00 admissions to UHS with 350 level 3 retrievals and another 250 transport episodes. All types of cardiac interventional procedures are carried out, with approximately 350 cardiac operations performed each year. UHS PICU has consistently one of the lowest SMRs and highest throughputs per bed of any PICU in the UK.

We are the Wessex paediatric major trauma centre, with a dedicated paediatric emergency department on site. The successful applicant will form part of the Consultant Team for PICU. With this appointment there will 10 whole time equivalent PICU Consultants. This is a new post due to service expansion

What You’ll Do

You will be directly responsible to the PICU Director and onwards to the Care Group Clinical Lead. You will be expected to work collaboratively with the other PICU Consultants and the wider paediatric multi-disciplinary team. As First on Consultant you will be in overall charge of the Unit and as Second on Consultant you will have primary responsibility for the retrieval service and critical care activity outside of PICU. You will also be responsible for liaising with other paediatric units to continue to improve and develop practice and service delivery for our patients. And you will be required to participate in the training and developing of the medical staff who rotate through the Unit. For candidates with appropriate experience there is the opportunity to be part of the ECMO consultant team

What We’re Looking For

A Paediatric intensivist with extensive practical skills, able to work well under pressure as part of the PICU team, and as part of the wider paediatric team.

Qualifications And Training

Essential criteria
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• GMC registration with a licence to practise
• MRCPCH/ FRCA or equivalent

Desirable criteria
• Higher degree, laboratory experienced research
• Education/teaching qualification

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
• Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
• Completion of PICU training approved by PICM ISAC
• Experience in management of congenital heart disease including cardiac ECMO
• Extensive experience in transporting critically ill children (land)
• Trauma experience
• Experience of cardiac intensive care
• Experience of general intensive care
• Experience of critical care transport
• Experience of critical care outreach/trauma team/cardiac arrest team member

Desirable criteria
• Experience in managing respiratory ECMO patients
• Experience of air transport
• Previous involvement in research either investigator lead or multicentre trials

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
• Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
• Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
